Pressure must be applied

To the editor: I was listening to an interview with Mark Glyptis, USW Local 2911 president, about the International Trade Commission ruling of four individuals who voted unanimously in favor of illegal dumping of Tin in the United States. During the interview, Glyptis mentioned some things that were very interesting. Paraphrasing him, he stated that he was by the union hall and could see Main Street. He saw trucks with coils that were wrapped differently and knew they were foreign. He followed them and saw them being placed into warehouses in the area. A question to be asked ...

Speak up on Resolution 5

To the editor: I’m writing to alert readers to House Joint Resolution 5, now making its way through the Ohio House. The title of this legislation refers to the right to hunt and fish in our state. But it also protects the use of leghold traps, baiting and hounding an animal to death. This provision would mean a slow and painful death for any animal which is targeted. And this would not be just a law, it would be enshrined in the Ohio Constitution. So our constitution would be used to protect several forms of animal cruelty. Please write to your state representative and let ...

Several options to contact board

To the editor: The board of trustees of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County offers and welcomes public commentary at its board meetings. The board meets monthly to conduct library business that includes an overview of finances, services, and reports from the county-wide library system’s branches and departments. A public comment period is included at each meeting. To have balance in conducting business and listen to the community, the public comment period was reformed, passed and announced in October. The new policy went into effect in December and can be ...

Decision was truly an honor

To the editor: Please permit me to take this opportunity to express my deepest appreciation to all those people who were instrumental in giving me the highest honor I’ve received. Hancock County Schools Superintendent Dan Enich, right before the latest basketball matchup between Weir High and Madonna, announced to those in the bleachers that he was citing me with one of his “Game Changers” awards. I was a bit stunned. However, what he said next was something I never imagined: Weir High School’s new girls’ softball field would be named after me. As a retired ...

Embarrassing situation

To the editor: How embarrassing. Ohio should change our primary election date to something earlier, at least in presidential election years. Not that it’d impact me this year, I’m a Democrat. We have the incumbency, so of course we’re running the 80-year-old white guy again. But Republicans have a choice, but by the time the primary gets here, that will be gone and Republicans’ll be running their 80-year-old white guy again. And I’ll vote for our blithering embarrassment in March and November because what other choice have I? But Republicans, what’ll you do? Your ...

Concerns unresolved

To the editor: Concerns of patrons of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County regarding LGBTQ books remain unresolved. In the children’s section of the library, along with the stories of Dr. Seuss, children can select from the shelves, “This Day in June” by Gayle Pittman. The back cover details this cartoon illustrated text as follows: “In a wildly whimsical, validating and exuberant reflection of the LGBT community, ‘This Day in June’ welcomes readers to experience a pride celebration and share in a day when we are all united. Also included is a ...
