Mayo deserves a second term

To the editor: It is my pleasure to wholeheartedly recommend Councilman Royal Mayo for re-election to Steubenville City Council. As a lifelong resident of Steubenville and the current Fourth Ward councilman, I have had the privilege of working with Mayo for two years during my 12 years on City Council and on several community and economic development initiatives. During his time in office, Royal has demonstrated unwavering dedication to improving the quality of life for all Steubenville residents. His leadership was instrumental in trying to secure HUD’s Choice Neighborhoods ...

History in the Hills: Ghosts of the past

This week is Halloween, and usually around this time of year, I get in the mood to read a good spooky tale or ghost story. I guess this is to prepare me to write a good local history tale of my own. Believe it or not, it is hard to find honest-to-goodness ghost stories from our area. They are just not written down. Rather, they are spread by word of mouth and passed down. I have heard of a few and many of those I have related in these columns during the past six years, but I am always on the hunt. For me, just because a story doesn’t have a “ghost” component, doesn’t mean it ...

What’s not to love about autumn?

I can remember a time when autumn was simply amazing. Cool breezes on amber days. Fallen leaves in colors one could only imagine. Yet, here they were … a mix of hues intertwined. Yellows, oranges, reds and browns … each a masterpiece all its own, appearing as if strategically placed by the author, himself, who created them. And every time the wind blew, you could somehow detect a faint glimpse of what heaven must smell like. Hints of pumpkin, apple, cinnamon ... collectively filling the air. Autumn used to be a beautiful time. At least in my mind. But all ...

Looking toward the future

To the editor: My name is Rich Gunther, and I’m running for a seat on Wintersville Council this November. If elected, I will bring a fresh voice and new ideas to our village government. I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself to those who may not know me. I’m originally from the Cleveland area and moved to Wintersville 13 years ago after meeting my wife, Sharen, who is from this area. Some of you may know us from our former business, Crystal Clear Window Cleaning. Over the years, I’ve owned several businesses and also served in the corporate world as a chief ...

Stand up for the library

To the editor: The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County has a renewal levy on the Nov. 4 ballot. There is a group calling itself the Committee for Decent Libraries which is campaigning for the defeat of this levy because it does not approve of some books available to the public, specifically books dealing with transgenderism which are in the young adult and children section of the library. This has been an ongoing issue with this group, which wants all books with which it does not agree, removed. To put this in context, the library has approximately 65,000 items ...

Some people are unaware

To the editor: I see signs from the Democratic Party that read, “We love people.” For some, that’s true: Some love illegal aliens, gang members, murderers, rapists, drag queens and rioters. Some especially love men in girls’ locker rooms and sports, like Maine Gov. Janet Mills. There are some who show a strange way of loving Trump, conservatives and religious people by shooting them and putting bounties on ICE agents. Here’s proof: The Democratic candidate for attorney general in Virginia, Jay Jones, texted that he wants to put two bullets into the head of his opponent ...
