Some treats, no tricks

Area residents have a lot on their minds as we approach the end of October. There’s the Thanksgiving holiday, which is only one month away, and then the Christmas season and all of the obligations and expectations that come with both. Before we get there, however, we have to get past Halloween, and all of the candy and decorating that comes along with it. Sweet treats are associated with holidays (which can loosely be expanded to include just about every day), but when it comes to when candy is the go-to purchase, Halloween tops the list. That’s according to Instacart, ...

Libraries fill an important role

To the editor: 1995: Whatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation.” Walter Cronkite Some 30 years ago, Walter Cronkite made this statement and although many things have changed as we moved into the 21st century, libraries are even more important today. They inspire lifelong learning, advance knowledge, and strengthen our communities. The library is the one place that is open to everybody. The public library requires nothing of its visitors: No purchases, no membership fees, no dress code. You can stay all day, and you don’t ...

To the editor: As the end of October approaches, I want to remind everyone in the Ohio Valley about the significance of Italian American Heritage Month, which is celebrated each year during this time. Established in 1989, this month serves as an opportunity to educate others and honor the numerous contributions of people of Italian descent to our country. The Ohio Valley, with its rich history, can proudly claim to be the home of several famous Italian Americans. In June, a group associated with the Heinz History Center visited the Jefferson County Historical Association museum ...

Could closure be coming?

To the editor: In Merica Petrella’s letter to the editor published on Oct. 11 (“More questions about diocese”), she stated that the Triumph of the Cross parish bulletin of Oct. 5, indicates that it is the Cathedral Parish Diocese of Steubenville. In previous bulletins prior to Oct. 5, it was designated a Roman Catholic Parish in the Diocese of Steubenville. In the Catholic Church, a “cathedral parish” is a church that holds the status of a cathedral and a parish. The change in cathedral designation from Holy Name cathedral is understandable considering that the former ...

Who is a fascist?

To the editor: The very first sentence in last week’s letter from Rob Denham claims Democrats go around calling conservatives fascists or Nazis. That’s simply false. Democrats aren’t calling conservatives fascists, because they’re not — we’re calling Donald Trump a fascist because of his words, his agenda and his deeds: Incompetently executed mass deportations, purging civil servants for political loyalty, weaponizing the Justice Department to prosecute perceived enemies, using the military in an attempt to crush dissent, trying to silence late-night comedians and ...

Keep lights on in the library

To the editor: I have been part of a group of concerned citizens who, in 2022, began advocating for our public libraries. It started when we discovered that the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County was coming under attack by people who were offended by books that don’t align with their particular beliefs. History has shown us that banning books never ends well. Local library officials tried to work with all involved to hear complaints while recognizing that libraries are public places where all law-abiding citizens deserve representation. Now it’s time ...
