How was your Mother’s Day?

To the editor: Like a lot of folks my age, Mother’s Day is a complicated time. It marks the loss of the person who was always in your corner. No matter how tough the opponent was or how badly beaten emotionally or physically, she had always been there to apply ointments or prepare a bowl of chicken soup. In my case, it was the anniversary of her 2007 surgery, which her strong will carried through all almost dying in the operating room, the way my father had in 2004, three years earlier. Only to lose her two months later to cancer. I traveled to Walmart on Sunday Morning, witnessing ...

Gas lighting the public on a toxic gas

To the editor: Recent articles about a multi-state carbon capture and storage hub gives unsuspecting readers an opinion that it is basically a reversed pipeline carrying CO2 from industrial sites, to an injection site, pumping the waste thousands of feet underground with very little risk to the public. What they don’t tell you is, when a line burst the CO2 under a higher-than-normal pressure will blow hundreds of feet into the air, then fall back to earth causing a ‘Death plume area’. Yes, death area, as the CO2 sucks all the oxygen from the surrounding area killing every living ...

Let King Trump read this without his glasses

To the editor: A message to Trump’s supporters: I suspect we’re all familiar with a document known as the Declaration of Independence. Or at least we’re probably all familiar with the Preamble. If you’re unfamiliar with the entirety of the document, it’s included in that Trump Bible you bought but never read. Part of the Declaration was a list of 17 grievances the colonists had with King George III of England. Some of the grievances included were: Cut off America’s trade with the rest of the world. Denied trial by jury. Transported colonists overseas to be tried ...

Biden Derangement Syndrome

To the editor: Lately, several letters in this paper seem more focused on blaming President Biden than addressing the reality of what’s happening right now under President Trump. It’s starting to feel like Biden Derangement Syndrome—an obsessive need to attack the past while ignoring the consequences we’re facing in the present. President Biden, for all his imperfections, did not cause the market to lose 6 trillion dollars in less than a week. He didn’t ignite a global trade war that’s now threatening American farmers and industries. And he didn’t campaign on promises ...

To the editor: Residents of the city of Steubenville have an outstandingly qualified candidate running for the office of mayor in the May primary election. Kimberly Hahn, a city resident for more than 35 years, has a uniquely impressive and varied background of experience to fill this position. Most recently, she has retired after five years of service as councilwoman-at-large, giving her firsthand insight to all aspects of city concerns. In addition, in this role, she has engaged in years of cooperation in work with current city officials and leaders. Aside from her service ...

An unhappy Easter

In the general context, the word derangement means a disturbance or disruption in the mental or physical state. Accordingly, this word is now included when defining and diagnosing those of us who did not vote for President Donald Trump and who do not support him and his policies. Apparently, we suffer from Trump Derangement Syndrome which, if you ask Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., is probably considered an epidemic. For your consideration as to one form of mental derangement, I would like to submit the Easter holiday greeting posted online by the leader of the free world. It seems to start ...
