Kripchak is the real deal

To the editor: I am responding to Barry Bardone’s letter criticizing Democratic candidate Michael Kripchak (“Rather be a deplorable,” May 19.) It is important to clarify and correct several misleading and false statements that were made. First and foremost, Kripchak is a dedicated and independent candidate who has consistently demonstrated his commitment to the people of Ohio. Unlike his opponent, Michael Rulli, Kripchak is not influenced by special interests or big-money donors. He is focused on representing the true interests of our community, not the agenda of lobbyists ...

You can make a difference

To the editor: The Cancer Dietary Initiative is celebrating 11 years of service this month, Since its inception in May 2013, on every third Saturday, patients with an active cancer diagnosis have been the recipients of meals to provide nutrition for themselves and their families. The community has come together to meet and exceed these needs. The CDI is staffed by volunteers who give willingly of their time. We are blessed to be a blessing and look forward to meeting the needs of our community going forward. If you have ever thought about what you could do, volunteers need only ...

Values signs offered to rural voters

To the editor: The March primary in Jefferson County was marked by a low turnout of just 22 percent of registered voters casting their ballots. Of those voters, about 3,000 of them chose to vote a Democratic ticket. A quick tally of Democrats who hold posts in the local party comes in between 50 and 60 people, comprising party officeholders and members of the central and executive committees. That leaves more than 2,500 Democrats that could easily be labeled disenfranchised and unheard within the structure of their chosen political party. Jefferson County is not alone in the way its ...

Difference between writers

To the editor: I read the column “The anti-abortion right is not into compromise” written by Froma Harrop that appeared in the April 14 edition. Then, I read Dan Hawrot’s letter to the editor “When does life begin?” Hawrot’s letter talks about facts taken from the field of science. In his reasoning, he used family, friends, churches and society to support the mother, father and the unborn infant. I agree that when the mother and father start the process of a human being, that at the moment of conception, life begins. The direct approach to abortion should be to ...

Help in fight against cancer

To the editor: Cancer — this word is heart-wrenching to those who hear it. One out of three Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. This year alone more than 12,500 people will hear that word in West Virginia. Perhaps you heard that word yourself or you know someone who did. We can help with supporting the American Cancer Society. On June 1, the Brooke/Hancock chapter of the American Cancer Society will host a Relay for Life at Wellsburg Central Park from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Relay for Life is an event to celebrate with cancer survivors and to ...

Battling climate change

To the editor: I am writing this on the 16th anniversary of my admission to the emergency room at Trinity Medical Center West, where my recovery was deemed a miracle facilitated by Dr. Edgar Sanchez, who specialized in cardiovascular and pulmonary medicine, as well as other medical professionals at Trinity. This week’s tree core ring research has revealed that during last summer, June through August, air temperatures were the hottest in the Northern Hemisphere in the last 2,000 years. The instrumental evidence only reaches back as far as 1850 at best, and most records are ...
