To the editor:
The March primary in Jefferson County was marked by a low turnout of just 22 percent of registered voters casting their ballots. Of those voters, about 3,000 of them chose to vote a Democratic ticket. A quick tally of Democrats who hold posts in the local party comes in between 50 and 60 people, comprising party officeholders and members of the central and executive committees. That leaves more than 2,500 Democrats that could easily be labeled disenfranchised and unheard within the structure of their chosen political party.
Jefferson County is not alone in the way its political parties conduct business. Historically, a party "machine" controls the operations, makes the rules and cuts the deals. Their web of power is encompassing and makes it hard for anyone outside party loyalists to gain entry into that exclusive group. As an activist in our community, I often meet many unheard Democrats. They are pleased when someone takes the time to acknowledge them and to validate their concerns. They also tell me that they feel invisible, and they feel fear. How many of you are now afraid to place a campaign sign in your yard? Since the rise of the MAGA movement, those who identify as good Democrats are often intimidated, even threatened, if they dare to display a campaign sign for a Democrat. So many times, they want to stand up for their values. They want to have a voice, but they want support and to know that their party has their back.
The good news is that there is a way for those Democrats to be heard. It doesn't come from their party but comes courtesy of RuralOrganizing.org, a frontline network, fighting to save our democracy, especially in areas like Jefferson County. This organization is supplying yard signs touting the important values that you and I live by. These free signs for your yard are printed with this slogan: "We Support Choice, Freedom, Healthcare." It's a simple, yet strong message to let the world know that good Democrats are still here and we're not going anywhere. These signs can help us to build a community of "vocal locals" who haven't been heard for a long time. Now is your chance to stand up with pride in your beliefs. To receive your free sign, please e-mail your request and contact information to newspro1340@comcast.net, or text to (740) 346-8095.
The flap on the Democrats' big tent may not be as open as it once was, but seeing these values signs around the county just might send the message to those in power that everyone benefits when all Democrats are embraced and not erased. Become a Vocal Local and let's show everyone that choice, freedom and health care are good things and deserve our support. All Democrats matter, after all.
