Questions about our future

To the editor: The job of an elected federal official is to be the eyes and ears of their constituents, who have elected them to be their voice and to protect their interest. In taking an oath they swear to support and defend the Constitution of the U.S. against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and bear true faith and allegiance to the same. They take the obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion and will well and faithfully discharge the duties of office. “So, help me God”. Thanks to three Democratic presidents — Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and ...

Time for Jill Biden to stand up

To the editor: The perks of being the first lady must be far more than what is visible to the general public. How can Jill Biden, a supposedly intelligent woman, stand by and watch, on a daily basis, the decline of her husband and do nothing to step in and act on his behalf to step down as president is pathetic. How can she say with a straight face that he is full of energy and is capable of running for another term of office? The public is not blind, nor are we stupid. How can she stand by and watch the ridicule from the media and not be angry as hell? I know of no woman who ...

The Trump personality cult

To the editor: How telling is it that former President Donald J. Trump’s current, who also happens to be his third, wife, Melania, has literally not appeared at any recent campaign event in support of her husband in his quest to regain the presidency, as reportedly been the case for months? In addition, the current Mrs. Trump failed to appear during her husband’s seven-week long trial in Manhattan, in which Trump was found guilty on three felony counts for his $130,000 hush-money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels in 2016 in order to prevent the electorate from being informed of ...

Library factions can co-exist

To the editor: It’s been two years since the public debate began over LGBTQIA+ books in the collection of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County. The library board has remained committed to providing materials inclusive of all people, including that community and others, like those of the Roman Catholic faith. The books are still here and the world has not ended. There are no reports of heterosexual children becoming homosexual nor gay children becoming straight. I consider that solid proof that we can co-exist here without trying to erase one another. Is there ...

Let’s finish sewer project

To the editor: The best thing that has happened in Amsterdam in at least the last 50 years is the recently completed sewer project. A number of employed, two-parent families have moved into town, and that hasn’t happened in decades. And we are still in the early stages of what may be a period of modest prosperity. So, it was disheartening to recently read in this newspaper that many houses are not yet connected to the new system. The Jefferson County commissioners are understandably worried, since the loans that financed this project must be repaid with money from monthly water ...

Indian Creek golf outing a success

To the editor: Indian Creek would like to thank the following individuals and businesses for donating their time and contributing to our annual golf outing. Thanks to them, the 19th-annual Indian Creek Golf Outing was a huge success. All proceeds will benefit the Indian Creek athletic program and football team. First, I would like to thank Marshall Hone and the Highland Springs Golf Course for their overwhelming hospitality. I want to thank my football staff for all of the hard work they did in preparation for the outing and the time they put in during the outing. I would like to ...
