Libraries fill an important role

2 min read

To the editor:

1995: Whatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation." Walter Cronkite

Some 30 years ago, Walter Cronkite made this statement and although many things have changed as we moved into the 21st century, libraries are even more important today. They inspire lifelong learning, advance knowledge, and strengthen our communities.

The library is the one place that is open to everybody. The public library requires nothing of its visitors: No purchases, no membership fees, no dress code. You can stay all day, and you don't have to buy anything. You don't need money or even a library card to access a multitude of on-site resources that includes books, e-books and magazines, job hunting assistance, computer stations, free Wi-Fi and much more.

The Public Library System of Steubenville and Jefferson County is among the very best library systems in the state of Ohio, and it provides programs for toddlers to seniors -- book clubs, cooking demonstrations, handyman workshops, knitting and sewing, game nights, movie nights, travel presentations and so much more.

Please vote "yes" on Nov. 4 to renew the library levy. It will not increase your taxes, and it will continue to provide something for everyone -- for free.
