Take a look at the ‘science’

To the editor: National Public Health Week is celebrated every year in April by the American Public Health Association. This organization influences U.S. public health policy with information that they claim is based on science. They conduct public health educational campaigns such as National Public Health Week. They claim that the materials they produce for this campaign will “raise awareness about public health and prevention.” There is a theme for each day of the week. I checked reproductive and sexual health. The first topic was abortion. This organization is promoting ...

Lessons from Humpty Trumpty

To the editor: One Fox News pundit wants to start a calamity: World War III. That’s Sean Hannity’s response to Russia’s downing of a U.S. drone. Let’s down one of theirs and see if it happens. Then again, let’s do 100 of theirs. Two nuclear bombs dropped on two cities in Japan, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, by the United States ended World War II. Fast forward to 2023, and who is the man to start World War III? A nursery rhyme that fits the times is “Humpty Trumpty,” who ruled a nation that was greatest of all. It was doomed by double-talk that made it ready to fall. ...

Why transport these chemicals?

To the editor: East Palestine toxic train wreck questions have revolved around railroad safety. But the most important question has yet to be asked: Why is a toxic petrochemical like vinyl chloride transported around in trains (and trucks) in the first place? Vinyl chloride starts as petroleum and ends up as plastic (PVC pipe.) Why isn’t the entire process in one place? Not that oil spills are great, but they’re better than this chemical disaster. Amendment wrong way to go

To the editor: I am writing in regards to the amendment to Article 1 of the Ohio Constitution concerning reproductive freedom, which might be on the ballot in November. This proposed amendment is supporting Big Pharma and it is not written in the interest of the health and safety of women at all. The pill which induced an abortion will devastate the health of a woman who uses it. It is not natural, but artificial. We know from the many ads displayed on television and social media that medications being advertised have side effects that can cause suicidal thoughts, cancer and other ...

Local Democrats tout improvements

To the editor: As Congress considers President Joe Biden’s budget request for fiscal year 2024, the Jefferson County Democratic Party wants to remind county residents that the Democratic Congress passed, and Biden signed into law, about 300 bills that helped our county. Republicans voted against these. In Jefferson County during the early years of COVID, the CARES Act provided money for personal protective equipment for our workers. In 2021, the stimulus bill provided money for many people across the county when businesses were closed and people could not work. It also gave a ...

Social workers make a difference

To the editor: March is Social Work Month, and as Richard W. Greenlee, Tracy A. Pritchard and I, faculty in Ohio University Eastern’s Social Work Program, we’re excited to celebrate the efforts and impact of social workers in our communities and around the world. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Social Work Breaks Barriers.” For generations, social workers have broken barriers to help people live better lives. They’ve helped break through barriers that have led to the creation of a minimum wage, a 40-hour work week and the implementation of Social Security ...
