Unit closure will have big impact

To the editor: A recent front-page article in the Herald-Star tells us that the Jefferson County commissioners are looking into the revenues and expenses of our local justice system. One recent development will no doubt have consequences, not just for balancing the books, but on human suffering. Trinity Health System is in the process of closing its substance abuse and treatment unit. This includes inpatient and outpatient services. The detox unit is also to be discontinued. So cases involving a drug overdose will have to go elsewhere. I’ve been present at meetings of the ...

Questions about Latin Mass

To the editor: Bishop Jeffrey Monforton of the Diocese of Steubenville continues to make questionable and incompetent decisions. Last week he ordered an immediate end to celebrating the Traditional Latin Mass at the chapel at the Franciscan University of Steubenville. This Mass was attended by about 250 students as well as faculty and staff. Pope Francis recently stated that every bishop who has conceded in the past the use of parish churches, which includes St. Peter, for celebration of the TLM without the assent of the Apostolic See will now be required to submit a request to ...

Biden continues to blunder

To the editor: Your 401(k) lost 23 percent in 2022, gas is still $3.53 and inflation is 6 percent higher than Trump’s 1.5 percent. Feel any relief in your grocery or heating bills? Are you happy spending $10,000 more than last year? Our nincompoop president, in only two years, destroyed America’s banking, food and supply chain, student loan, energy, transportation, athletic, military, educational and immigration basic structure systems. He’s stupid or a communist. I’m all for reparations only if registered Democrats pay for it because they started the Civil War over keeping ...

Privatize that railroad

To the editor: All our lives we’ve been fed the lie that nationalization of any business is a power grab by the federal government; that regulations make businesses unprofitable; that laissez-faire capitalism is a net public good. Yet all available evidence says different, and sometimes privatization is actually necessary for the public’s well-being. In 1917, the U.S. took control of all privately run railroads, running them for the benefit of the war effort under a government agency called the Railroad Administration. After the war, railroad workers’ unions supported ...

Lawsuit is interesting

To the editor: As a result of the $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox News by Dominion Voting Systems, a very prominent voting machine company, it has been revealed that virtually all Fox executives and program hosts strongly believe that the claims that they were making, seemingly endlessly, on the air that the 2020 U.S. presidential election was somehow rigged against President Donald J. Trump in his bid for re-election by entities, in particular Dominion Voting Systems, were, in fact, completely bogus, and were done to placate their many viewers by their advocating for and ...

Biden ignores working class

To the editor: Let’s see how “Working Class Joe” and his administration have been supporting the actual working-class citizens of our country. In early February a train derailed in the small town of East Palestine. The initial reaction from President Biden and his transportation secretary, Pete Buttigieg, was absence. The administration decided to leave everything up to the railroad and the state of Ohio. Railroad cars with toxic wastes were burned, causing a toxic plume in that area and in neighboring Pennsylvania. FEMA was not deployed, and the residents were given no ...
