Direction of Democrats troubling

To the editor By the time this letter reaches the editor’s desk, the Jefferson County Democratic Party will have had another meeting. I would like to suggest at this point that the meeting had some inclusivity or some progressive discussions, but that probably didn’t happen. What I can guess is that the meeting involved some extensive differences of opinion, yelling, stomping of feet and bullying within the committees that are supposed to work together. They are supposed to give direction to the Democratic voters of this county. Decency and inclusiveness should be a given in ...

Take a moment to learn about nurses

To the editor: For generations, nurses have shown an unwavering commitment to patients, their communities and our health care systems. May is National Nurses Month, and we’re excited to celebrate the efforts and impact of nurses in our communities and around the world. This year’s theme — “You Make a Difference” — was selected to encourage nurses, other health professionals, employers, community leaders and the public to recognize and promote the vast contributions and positive impact of America’s nurses. Matthew Fox, Kayla Lucarelli and Loretta Marchetta and I of the ...

Teaching the wrong lesson

To the editor: It’s disappointing that students at John Gregg Elementary School are being encouraged to support the cruel treatment of dogs in the Iditarod (“Lesson at John Gregg Elementary School goes to the dogs,” April 26.) Today’s deadly race bears no resemblance to the original event — an emergency delivery of diphtheria serum. On average, dogs are forced to run more than 100 miles per day, with few — and brief — intervals of rest. They are subjected to biting winds, blinding snowstorms, sub-zero temperatures and falls through treacherous ice into frigid water. ...

To the editor: Two leaders of competitive political parties were talking. “We don’t debate, we pontificate,” one said. The response from the other leader was, “That’s settled.” John Murray Steubenville

A salute to the veterans

To the editor: Hats off to the Vietnam veterans who walked out of the Steubenville City Council meeting of April 4 after being disrespected by two members of council who choose to not participate in the pledge to our flag. Those men are heroes. The councilwoman said that it was not meant as a slap in the face — it was worse. You might as well have just gone over and spit on them. Vietnam was a horrible war. Our young men and women marched into battle with our flag above them. Those men at the meeting, by the grace of God, made it home. Many more came home, day after day, to the ...

Times have changed

To the editor: Memories: Thinking of how different things were back when I was in college, 1976-1980. My freshmen year at Ohio University in Athens, I was in a place where I knew no one and wondered how I would adapt. I decided at some point that as I would walk up Richland Avenue to class, I would look as many people as I could in their eyes and say hello and smile. I never kept a count, but I remember feeling the majority said hello back and it made me feel better about being alone in a new place. Other thoughts of that time is how we did not have a smart phone, and when we ...
