Keep lights on in the library

To the editor:

I have been part of a group of concerned citizens who, in 2022, began advocating for our public libraries.

It started when we discovered that the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County was coming under attack by people who were offended by books that don’t align with their particular beliefs.

History has shown us that banning books never ends well. Local library officials tried to work with all involved to hear complaints while recognizing that libraries are public places where all law-abiding citizens deserve representation.

Now it’s time to stand up for our library system again as it seeks renewal of its 1-mill, five-year levy. The money generated accounts for one-third of the funds needed to operate two libraries in Steubenville, as well as rural branches in Adena, Brilliant, Dillonvale, Tiltonsville, Toronto and the bookmobile.

My heart tells me that the small group of people that now want to defeat the levy renewal and cripple operations are transplants who did not grow up here and did not get to experience the thrill of learning off the library shelves that the rest of us got to enjoy. The library is where I first recognized I could be a self-starter and, at the age of 4, taught myself to read when my mom took me there. The staff members guided me through reading adventures and helped me to discover a world I could delight in just by turning a page. The work done by staff members today is so honorable and they should be held in the highest regard; not have their jobs eliminated because of a lack of funding.

It’s time for voters to take a stand and protect our treasured institutions. We are inundated with so much fake news and misinformation these days. We need a source that we can trust to provide accurate information, education and entertainment for everyone. The Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County shines a light on discovery, enlightenment and belonging for its users.

Don’t forget the other services it provides, like meeting spaces, historical archives, computer, internet and Wi-Fi use, notary services, museum passes and the new Makerspace equipment. We can’t afford to lose these valuable resources.

Again, this is not a new tax. Your vote will be to renew a 1-mill, five-year operating levy. Your “yes” vote in the Nov. 4 election will confirm your support for our entire community and the libraries you can use and enjoy.

Our libraries provide a better life for everyone in Jefferson County.
