JUHS Class of 1966 has 50-year reunion plans
The Jefferson Union High School Class of 1966 will holds its 50-year reunion with a celebration in August.
The festivities will begin with attendance at the Edison Local High School football game on Aug. 26.
On Aug. 27, the reunion and dinner will be held at Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort. The social hour begins at 5 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m.

Citizens give
ribbons to vets

Youth council plans video game tournament
The Advocates for Substance Abuse Prevention Youth Council will host a Super Smash Brothers video game tournament at noon Saturday at the Mary H. Weir Public Library located at 3442 Main St., Weirton.
The event will include door prizes, a concession stand, opportunities to try old-school consoles and option to purchase character badges.

Veterans satellite office to be
open Wednesday in Dillonvale
The satellite office of the Jefferson County Veterans Service Commission will be open from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the Dillonvale City Building, 135 School St., Dillonvale, to assist veterans, dependents of veterans, and/or veterans’ widows with Veterans Administration pensions, compensations, burials, schooling, medical assistance and other veterans’ benefits.

Nifty Needles Sewing Group
scheduled to meet June 7
The Nifty Needles Sewing Group held the May meeting at the First Christian Church located on Main Street, Weirton.
Leader Nancy Sanders greeted the six members attending.
Marcie Cooper displayed a Van Gogh print purse during show-and-tell; Carol Village displayed fabric cookbook covers; and Nancy Linn displayed Vogue patterns. Sanders presented the program on Easter tote bags for children, and members received kits to take home. Cooper won the door prize.

tour Underground Railroad Museum
Steubenville City Schools retirees gathered for lunch May 12 at Mehlman’s Cafeteria in St. Clairsville before taking an afternoon tour of the Underground Railroad Museum in Flushing.
John Mattox, curator, addressed the group and fielded questions. The group’s next luncheon will be held June 16 during the annual Greek Food Festival in Steubenville. Dave Nicholson has arranged a tour of Historic Fort Steuben afterward.

Eileen Krupinski elected
president of Questers chapter
The Bezaleel Wells Chapter No. 1474 of Questers met May 19 for a luncheon meeting at the YWCA of Steubenville.
Ruth Stevens served as hostess at the meeting attended by Phyllis Foreman, Iris Craig, Eileen Krupinski, Roxanne Matysiak, Susanne Escobar, Darlene Baker and Judy Irvin. The business meeting including the election of Krupinski as president for the 2017-18 year and Baker, treasurer.
Stevens presented a program on “The History and Origin of Herbs,” noting that herbs have been used for centuries and in every culture for medicinal and culinary purposes. She also cited several passages in the Bible that mention the use of herbs and had a display of different potted herbs to explain their common uses. Members were asked to identify by smell, touch or sight the herbs, many of which were grown in Stevens’ garden. Members were given a plant to take home.
Marlene Rhueff will be the hostess for the June meeting.

Tri-State Marine Corps Club Auxiliary members meet
The Tri-State Marine Corps Club Auxiliary met May 9 at the Weirton Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall with President Joan Spano presiding. Chaplain Mary Ann Smith gave the invocation, read “A Christian Mother” and asked members to share memories of their mothers.
Marcy Spano led in special prayers.
Joan Spano welcomed new member Janis Rouch, the wife of club member Don Rouch of Mingo Junction.

Mary Ann Smith won the 50/50 drawing and donated her prize back to the auxiliary treasury. Joan Spano completed more than 90 letters for June’s bakeless bake sale. Leroy Bee will place the auxiliary’s wreath at the city’s Memorial Day ceremony Monday, and J.J. Jurosko will place the club’s wreath.

Annual Calendar Tea at Emmanuel Church of God
Emmanuel Church of God in Christ, located at 128 S. Fifth St., Steubenville, will hold its annual Calendar Tea beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
The tea will feature four seasons – summer, spring, autumn and winter – and the chairmen for each will be: Oree Gilliam; summer; Mary Jeter, spring; Tanya Martin, winter; and Deana Hines, fall.
Music will be provided by Delores Wiggins, minister of music. The public is invited, and refreshments will be served.

Library, literacy groups will
hold volunteer celebration
The Mary H. Weir Public Library, Literacy and Lifelong Learning Program, Literacy West Virginia and Weirton Area Literacy Council will hold the annual volunteer celebration at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the library’s lower level activity room located at 3442 Main St., Weirton.
The event will include entertainment, food and door prizes. All literacy and lifelong learning students, library volunteers and tutors and Friends of Literacy are invited. A meat entree will be provided, and those attending are asked to bring a side dish, drink or dessert.

Literacy and Lifelong volunteers provided more than 420 hours of service in April, and nine students are studying for the West Virginia High School Equivalency Diploma. Two students are studying English as a second language and another received an equivalency diploma. Twelve students participated in computer classes and job skills/computer training workshops, while three others found work.
National Council on Aging volunteers and Department of Health and Human Resources volunteers completed online job applications during workshops.

Healthy Life Workshop
on medication adherence
Harrison Community Hospital will host its June 2 Healthy Life Workshop at 6:30 p.m. in the hospital cafeteria with Pharmacist Jesse Milowicki of Custer Pharmacy leading a discussion on “Medication Adherence.”
Milowicki will review the importance of taking an entire prescription as directed by the physician. Participants also will learn how some foods, alcohol and other medications and over-the-counter supplements may interfere with the medication’s absorption rate, causing the drug to be stronger or weaker than normal.
The July 7 Healthy Life Workshop will feature guest speaker Eric Wilson, director of the Harrison County Emergency Management Agency.
The free, educational Healthy Life Workshops are held the first Thursday of each month in the hospital’s cafeteria and feature physicians, nurses, dieticians and other health care professionals covering a wide range of topics such as diabetes, arthritis, cardiovascular disease and other health issues.
Light refreshments are served, and reservations are not necessary.
Chrisagis Brothers to minister in song at Empire church
The Chrisagis Brothers will minister in song during a special presentation on Friday at River Christian Fellowship at 186 Nesley St., Empire.

Meeting year ends for
Weirton Woman’s Club
The Weirton Woman’s Club held the closing meeting May 7 at the Williams Country Club, with President Jeanne Amidon calling the meeting to order and Mary Ellen Groves giving the inspiration and blessing.
Members observed a moment of silence for Sue Ann Barrett and Rita Griffith.
Amidon presented donations to Hancock County Sheriff Ralph Fletcher for the K-9 Unit, Hancock County Animal Shelter, Greater Weirton Senior Citizens Center, Weirton Christian Center, Comfort House and the Table of Hope.
Singer and guitarist Chuck Lucas entertained.
Amidon presented her officers, department chairs and committee chairs with a gift in thanks and appreciation for their work for the club in the past two years.
Sharon Sheridan, Greater Federation of Women’s Clubs of West Virginia president, attended the meeting and installed the 2016-18 officers.
They include President Diana Durst, First Vice President Sandy Robbins, Second Vice President Helen Gibson, Recording Secretary Susan Baldt, Treasurer Kay Kempler and Financial Secretary Joan Underwood.

Members of Moving On, a widows and widowers group, met May 1 for their luncheon and meeting at Undo’s in Weirton with Lucretia “Toots” Ross presiding.
Jim Boulson gave the blessing and closing prayer. Birthdays were acknowledged.
Vases with tissue paper, candies and flower seeds decorated the tables and were provided by Margaret Ashbee, Janet Gilham, Fran Parsons, June Puskarich and Mary Lou Shutak.
The poem “A Mother” was composed and read by Ingrid Koenig. Doris McPherson was a guest.
Ross gave the secretary’s report and Chapman, the treasurer’s report.
Entertainment was provided by Nick Gallias the magician with members assisting with his magic tricks, cards and numbers.
Sunshine girl Nancy Smurda reported on get well cards sent and Margaret Chapman on finances.
David Kramarich and Ross conducted the 50-50 drawing won by Nancy Smurda. Other prizes winners were Richard Kimmel, gift certificate; Ross, Zmurda, Jack Davis, Doris McPherson and Ann Zmuda, table prizes; Anita Spadaford, necklace; and Mary Gaudio, Kimmel and Becky Michalka, money envelopes.

VFW Post 2716 Auxiliary holds
May meeting, installs officers
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2716 Auxiliary met May 12 with President Gloria Jerrel presiding.
Secretary Marcy Spano called the officers’ roll and read the April 13 meeting minutes.
Treasurer Shirley Brecht gave the financial report.
New member Kelly Sikora was accepted into the group.
Chair Sherry Hornick announced Poppy Day had been a success and thanked those involved. The auxiliary will hand out candy to children during the city’s Fourth of July parade. Banners purchased through the post and Chris Connell will be displayed throughout downtown until Veterans Day.
The post will host a veterans memorial motorcycle ride at 10 a.m. Sunday, with a rain date of May 29, and auxiliary members are asked to bring desserts. The Christmas party has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Dec. 8 at Giovanni’s Restaurant located on Pennsylvania Avenue.
The 2016-2017 officers were installed, including President Gloria Jerrel, Senior Vice President Sherry Hornick Junior, Vice President Scott Sikora, Treasurer Shirley Brecht, Secretary Marcelle Spano and Chaplain Edith Truax, who gave the closing prayer.
The next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. June 9.

The Toronto Senior Citizens celebrated their anniversary dinner May 12 at the Stratton Municipal Building.
Guests were Mayor John and Tracey Parker and Don and Cheryl Clarke.
Music was provided by Bob, Rita and Fred Cline of the Vinyl Classics from Hopedale.
Joyce Zimmerman gave the blessing for the catered dinner by Brickers.

Jeep show Saturday in
Weirton to benefit CASA
The Ohio Valley Jeep Association, a newly formed group of Jeep owners, will hold a Jeep show to benefit A Child’s Place Court-Appointed Special Advocates from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at 2322 Kings Creek Road, Weirton.
Proceeds from a $10 registration fee from Jeep owners will go to the nonprofit group, which trains volunteers to represent the interests of children involved in abuse and neglect cases in Brooke, Hancock and Jefferson counties. All Jeep brand vehicles are welcome.
There will be live entertainment, food, games, a 50-50 drawing, Chinese auction, drawing, door prizes and a Jeep playground.
Bark for a Cure fundraiser
to be held Sunday in Richmond
A Bark for a Cure in support of Stacy’s Pink Posse Relay for Life team will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Richmond Park, located behind the former Richmond Elementary School.
Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. Cost is $5 per dog which includes a doggie bandana, a dog treat and the opportunity to win door prizes.
The event also will include food, basket drawings, a 50-50 drawing, games and a presence by Destiny Dog Obedience School and trainer Mark Kinkaid.
The Rev. Georgette Gaston, pastor of Richmond United Methodist Church, will conduct individual blessings of the pets, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
Pet photographs also will be offered.
The event is in memory of Dr. Stacy Davis, a veterinarian who lost her battle with cancer on May 2, 2012.

Four Seasons Senior Citizens

The Four Seasons Senior Citizens held their April meeting at the Serbian American Cultural Center in Weirton with President Chris Sklenar presiding.
After dinner, members were entertained with songs from the past by Dave and Shari Jo Watson.
The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read. Reservations Chair Josie Cekinovich announced the menu for the next meeting.
April birthdays were acknowledged. A report was given on sympathy cards sent.
Members voted not to have a meeting in January due to the possibility of bad weather.
The free dinner went to Martha Varitek.
Janet Orler and Lois Dick won the 50-50 drawing.
Other prize winners were Marge Trinone, Betty Wamsley, Carolyn Shaffer, Ron Fallert and Joann Llewellyn.
The next meeting will be held May 18.
After the meeting, members played bingo.

The Ohio Public Employee Retirees Inc. Chapter 5, District 9, met April 13 at Zalenski’s Eatery and Pub in Wintersville.
President Doris Starr presided at the meeting with Joyce Summers leading the opening prayer and Eileen Warfield leading in opening ceremonies.
Officers’ reports were given and approved.
Treasurer Steve Hughes’ presentation on his days working on the Alaskan pipeline will be rescheduled at a later date.
Martha Olivito won the 50-50 drawing, and Harold Ray won the door prize.
The next meeting will be held at noon on Wednesday with Sophie Spencer, interim director of the YWCA of Steubenville, as the guest speaker.

Lola Swanagan discussed trips, announcing that the Sugarcreek trip was canceled. The trip to Lancaster will be May 16 and 17 with parking to be at the football parking lot. The time will be announced at a later date.

Play and Learn, for parent with children birth to 3, will be at the Schiappa branch on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. and at 6 p.m. This is a one-hour play group. iPads with educational apps also are available for parent and children to use.
Children can be creative when making a craft at the Adena branch today at 5:30 p.m. and at the Dillonvale-Mount Pleasant branch on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

A fundraiser baked steak dinner will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Wayne Township Community Center in Unionport.
Computer class Tuesday at Follansbee Branch Library
The Follansbee Branch Library will offer a free basic computer class for adults at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
The class will be instructed by Jason Rine from the West Virginia University Extension office.

Wall of Fame nominees
The Brooke County Schools Wall of Fame committee is entering its 14th year in its quest to recognize past employees for distinguished service to Brooke County Schools.
Newly selected honorees will be recognized at a ceremony by the Brooke County Board of Education in June and their names will be added to the Wall of Fame plaque at the board office.
Nomination forms are available at the board’s office, all Brooke County schools, the school bus garage and Brooke County and Follansbee libraries.
Anyone with knowledge of a deserving individual may make a nomination. Prior nominations are still eligible. Criteria for nomination are: any past or retired Brooke County Schools employee, service or professional personnel, with at least 20 years service and living or deceased.
The nomination deadline is May 20.
Veterans sought for Brooke County museum book
The Brooke County Historical Museum and Culture Center is scheduling interviews for veterans to be featured in the second volume of a series of books collecting profiles of veterans from Hancock, Brooke and Ohio counties.
Any who haven’t submitted applications are asked to do so as soon as possible.
The books cover members of all military branches, past and present. Applications are available at the Brooke County Museum, 704 Charles St. or by calling (304) 737-0506.
The museum has a limited number of copies of Volume I for sale.

Fundraiser breakfast May 14
at Four Seasons Ministry
Four Seasons Ministry, located in the former Pleasant Hill Elementary School on state Route 213, Steubenville, will host a community breakfast fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on May 14.
It is open to the public, and cost is by donation.
Two-day rummage sale
At Two Ridges Presbyterian
Two Ridges Presbyterian Church located at 1085 Canton Road, Wintersville, will host a two-day rummage sale next weekend.
It will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 13 and from 9 a.m. to noon on May 14, which will feature a “A Buck A Bag” shopping.
Serve Others Circle welcomes
Trinity Health System speaker
The Serve Others Circle of Kings Daughters and Sons met April 19 at the Prime Time Senior Center for a noon luncheon meeting with four members in attendance.
Martha Jane Brondos led the circle in opening ceremonies.
Donna Grimm, treasurer, and Lucille Smith, secretary, gave their respective reports. Grimm reminded members to bring blessing jars to the May meeting and read from Silver Cross, “Let Your Heart Sing,” by Carole Babel.
Brondos introduced Keith Murdock of Trinity Health System as the guest speaker, who discussed changes and improvements to the hospital system. New equipment for mammograms has been installed, and the cancer center has been updated. Express Care at Calcutta is doing well in its expansion, and the new hospice center is now open on the fourth floor of Trinity West, according to Murdock, who noted that Nurses Day will be observed in May. A question-and-answer period followed.
The next meeting will be held on May 17.
Quarter auction May 14 in Empire to benefit missions
The River Christian Fellowship Church located in Empire will host a fundraiser quarter auction to benefit missions.
It will be held on May 14. Doors will open at 1 p.m., and the auction gets under way at 2 p.m. Admission is $5 and includes one paddle. Additional paddles are $2 each. A concession stand will be available.
Vendors will include Mary Jay, Jamberry Nails, Tastefully Simple, Pure Romance, Origami Owl, Avon, Ambience Baskets, Tupperware, Perfectly Posh, 31 Bags, Candles by Bobie, Wreaths by Garnet, Women’s Accessories by Daniele, Butterflies by Heather and Style Dots Jewelery.
Richmond UMW program
on ‘Called to be Merciful’
The Richmond United Methodist Women met April 28 with Gloria Mercer, vice president, leading the program “Called to be Merciful.”
Mercer referenced scripture from Matthew 5 and Mark 10 and noted mercy appears more than 200 times in the Bible. Readers were Peggy Pratt, Marge Andres and Sandy Burruss.
President Sue Frye presided at the business session. A gift in memory of the late Jess Long was sent to missions.
Joyce Proffitt gave a report on the spring district meeting where 17 UMW units were represented. Richmond is a five-star unit.
Mercer reviewed upcoming events, including: May 26, the Rev. Georgette Gaston will give the program; June 13, serving the JOSHUA volunteers breakfast; and June 23, summer luncheon at J.C. Wine Cellar.
Andres read from the prayer calendar, and Frye read an article about the General Conference of the United Methodist Church to be held in Oregon. Ohio will have five delegates at it.
Frye served as hostess at the meeting attended by 12 members.
IACC announces scholarship winners, has meeting Monday
The Italian American Cultural Club meeting held April 11 brought the announcement of five scholarship winners, each of whom will received a $1,000 scholarship at the club’s July 11 meeting.
Each year, the club offers scholarships to students for their Italian descent as well as their accumulative hours of cultural volunteer work with the club.
Recipients are:
Reno Tarquinio, son of Reno J. Tarquinio Dawn Tarquinio, Steubenville High School, college choice not determined;
Miranda Prayso, daughter of John and Caroline Sposito Prayso, SHS, plans to attend Ohio University;
Eva Balzano, daughter of Eric and Mary Balzano, Catholic Central High School, plans to attend Duquesne University;
Brianna Piergallini, daughter of Louis and Lori Piergallini, Indian Creek High School, plans to attend Ohio State University; and
Lorenzo Basil, son of Dr. John and Mary Basil, Madonna High School, plans to attend West Virginia University.
Mariella Pittera, Lucia Scaffidi and Rick Pastre directed “piccolo” performers for the Festival of Nations held in Weirton.

Special events discussed at the meeting included Una Serata planned for Aug. 6 and Festa del Vino on Nov. 4.

soup and sandwich sale
The Altar-Rosary Society of St. John Catholic Church will hold a soup and sandwich sale from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the church’s hall at 13th and Charles streets, Wellsburg.
The group will be selling three kinds of sandwiches and soups and baked goods, with $3 the cost for each. Take-out will be available.

Eldurays band today

Annual mother-daughter tea on May 14 at Brightway Center
The fourth-annual mother-daughter tea party will be observed at the Brightway Center, 2511 county Road 15, just outside of Smithfield from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on May 14.
Women are asked to bring a favorite tea cup and saucer and to wear “their Sunday best” for the event.
There will be prizes for most authentic hats, entertainment by Kara’s Kids youth group and door prizes.
Cost is $15 for mother and daughter with $5 for each additional daughter and $10 for singles. The admission is free for Girl Scouts and any girl interested in Scouting. Sign-ups are available at the tea.

The Smithfield American Legion Post 396 will host a Cinco de Mayo party open to the public from 8 p.m. to midnight on Thursday. There will be food and drawings. The Wheeling Civic Garden Center, Oglebay Park, will holds its annual “Day with Herbs” on May 13 beginning at 11 a.m.
An herbal luncheon, the sale of herb plants and a guest speaker will combine to make the 31st-annual herb day one of the best, according to organizers. The luncheon will include fresh vegetables and crackers with dips, a main course, dessert and herbal teas.

to host poppy day

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 33 in Steubenville will be distributing poppies in support of disabled veterans on Friday at Wal-Mart in Steubenville.
The unit’s next meeting will be held May 12 beginning at 6 p.m. Officers will be installed for the 2016-17 season. It will be the group’s last meeting until August.
Brooke Children’s Book Week going

The Brooke County Public Library and its Follansbee branch will be celebrating Children’s Book Week, May 2-7, with a variety of western-themed programs under the theme, “Saddle up and read, buckaroo!”
Young visitors to either library may stop by today for a coloring contest and on Friday and Saturday for western-themed activity sheets.
On Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., the Brooke County Library will have a western photo booth where children may have their photos taken with western props.
At 5 p.m. Thursday there will be a cowboy story hour with a western-themed craft at the Brooke County Library. Those coming to the story hour are asked to call (304) 737-1551. All of the programs and activities are free. The week offers an opportunity to learn about the variety of books, videos and other materials that are available at the two libraries.
Yard sale Saturday to benefit 4th Ward Park
A yard sale to benefit the city’s 4th Ward Park will be held there from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Volunteers behind it also will offer activities for children. Donation of items for the sale are welcome and they may be dropped off there between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
