Free concert for Thanksgiving

To the editor: As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, let us remember that this holiday is about more than just eating turkey and watching football. It’s a time to reflect on our blessings and show gratitude for all the good things in our lives. But it’s also a time to think about those who are less fortunate and make an effort to help them. As Christians, we are called to love our neighbors as ourselves and meet the needs of those around us. One way we can do this is by volunteering at a local food bank or shelter, donating money or goods to organizations that serve the ...

Student voter program a success

To the editor: Seven months ago, members of Ohio Valley NOW, your local chapter of the National Organization for Women, began a task to make a difference at the ballot box in our state. Our chapter was awarded a substantial Get Out the Vote grant from the national NOW Foundation. We used that to create a project to encourage young people in Jefferson and Belmont counties to exercise their right to vote. The grant specifically targeted student voters, a significant demographic often overlooked in our region. We took a somewhat different approach to reaching out to students. We ...

Let us choose life

To the editor: When does life begin? Regardless of opinions, regardless of laws, regardless of constitutions, science confirms that at the very moment of conception, a genetically unique human being is created. This human being is different from other person in the history of the world, and different from any person who will be created in the future. You and I, and all of the people we know, began our lives at the very moment of conception. With this fact established, then it is also a fact that every abortion ends the life of a unique person. That cannot be disputed. A life ...

A win for all involved

To the editor: On Oct. 21, 1944, Pope Pius XII established the Diocese of Steubenville and the first bishop was John King Mussio. The College of Steubenville, now the Franciscan University of Steubenville, was founded in 1946 at the request of the Diocese of Steubenville and Mussio, whose efforts resulted in the founding of the college. In the July 11 Crisis Magazine, the city of Steubenville has been ranked one of the 10 best cities in America to raise a Catholic family. It states Steubenville’s connection to multiple Catholic churches in the area, ties to Franciscan University ...

Lost pride, lost respect

To the editor: A very beautiful and picturesque cemetery has little respect for itself. The lack of a little care is replaced with impatience and laziness for new grave site appearances. A rake and shovel are not expensive equipment to buy. It should not be left to the grieving, disabled spouse to travel back to the cemetery with his own tools to fix a new site for it to be viewed as presentable to family members. It’s such a sad situation for a beautiful cemetery to lose self-respect for itself. As a former Richmond resident, I write please take a little pride in your ...

Making Halloween more enjoyable

To the editor: Terri Avenue had a great Halloween. Two young people treated us to a wax museum in their garage. They put a lot of time and effort into it. It was professionally done. Over the outside entry they had favors, and on the inside of the museum they had the wax figures and candy. The candy was great — it was like a candy store. It was unbelievable. All of the Halloweeners were great people and enjoyed it. Those two brothers put a smile on the face of everyone. Judy McDevitt Steubenville
