Bring Santa back to the fort

To the editor: Since the Nutcracker Festival and Village opened in 2015 in Steubenville, it was among my favorite events to attend. Seeing those life-sized nutcrackers at the Historic Fort Steuben was astounding and magical! The artistry of the nutcrackers is captivating. I have gone to see the Nutcrackers every year since the display was created. I enjoy everything connected with what the Historic Fort Steuben has to offer including all the outside decorations, the Holiday Marketplace, the performing groups and the displays at the Visitor Center. When I went to the fort in ...

Who should have control?

To the editor: For centuries, women hopelessly dreamed of having control of their own bodies. How is it that men have control over their bodies, but women don’t? We live under the same rules but don’t have the same rights. How does that happen in a democracy? Why would a woman, or child, want an abortion? First, she is just a child, with a child’s body. It’s absolutely horrendous, unjustifiable, masochistic and tragic to force a child to have a baby. Second, it is medically unsafe for a woman or child to deliver a child. Third, a child fears bringing shame on her ...

A look at immigration reform

To the editor: This letter is meant to respond to the guest column on immigration by Peter Sontag that was published in the Jan. 14 edition (“An example of how the immigration system should work.”) I might have been more receptive to his views had he simply acknowledged the fact that the U.S. immigration system has been broken for decades. It didn’t start with Joe Biden. Every president that I can remember, both Republican and Democrat, has had to contend with controversy over these policies. Unfortunately, despite concerted attempts by the current administration to pass an ...

State of our union

To the editor: Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution states that the president “shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union.” The State of the Union address is usually given early in the year and televised. Will Biden be able to deliver this address considering his physical and cognitive decline? Here is the actual state of our union. Our Southern border is wide open and 9 million illegal migrants have come into our country since Biden took office from countries all over the world. They are not properly vetted or checked for infectious ...

Some things don’t add up

To the editor: The Diocese of Steubenville has posted annual financial audits for four years starting July 1, 2018, and ending June 30, 2022. The diocesan financial audits can now be found on the Diocese of Steubenville’s website main page. The members are still waiting on the results of the audit conducted by Cincinnati Archbishop Dennis Schnurr’s financial audit results that commenced in February. In the May 13, 2022, edition of the Steubenville Register, former Bishop Jeffrey Monforton announced that plans to renovate the cathedral had been scrapped for lack of funds. Also, ...

What about the faithful?

To the editor: On Jan. 20, we attended Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Canton. After the homily, the priest announced that Youngstown Bishop David Bonnar, after speaking with the presbyteral council, has stated that the pastoral plan for St. Joseph and St. Joan of Arc is “90 percent complete.” By June there will be a name change for the parishes, but the names of the churches will remain the same. Both churches were combined a few years back, sharing one bulletin and priests. All the other church functions such as finances, clubs, etc. remained the same. With this ...
