Good neighbors say thanks

To the editor: Once again, the Wintersville Good Neighbors 2023 Christmas Program was a great success due to the help we have from the local churches, schools, businesses, civic clubs, social clubs and many private citizens who volunteer to help. In 1959, Ruth Cunningham organized a group of teachers at Wintersville Elementary School to help five little girls who were in need of clothing. In 2023, our organization was able to held 70 families with 148 children have a very merry Christmas with food, gifts and store cards. Our special thanks to Wintersville Methodist Church, which ...

Heading to worst rematch ever

To the editor: It’s looking more likely that the presidential campaign will be a replay between two octogenarians. If Frasier vs Ali was the rematch of the ages, this is the rematch of the aged. The Thrilla in Vanilla. The Rumble of the Bumbling-old-codgers. In the right corner, standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 215 pounds, Donald “Bing Bong” Trump’s shadow, maybe. Clearly, flesh-and-blood Trump weighs a heck of a lot more than that. And in the left corner, standing so long as the ground is level and weighing his words carefully, Joe “No Malarkey” Biden. But enough of ...

Conclusions about the election

To the editor: I have always appreciated the democratic republic that we in the United States of America enjoy. Knowing that that is not unanimous, such a stand gives many the right to disagree and to loathe the democratic republic. Currently, the talking heads who are Democrats, tell us that this is a most to-be-feared election just in case that Donald Trump is elected president. The monologue goes something like this: We have a healthy and well-balanced country with President Joe Biden and to change that will destroy the democracy and make of our country a totalitarian ...

A champ who boxed locally

To the editor: It has been announced that Michael Moorer, former world heavyweight boxing champion, will be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame as part of the distinguished Class of 2024. Local fans of the squared circle may recall the soon-to-be hall-of-famer appearing at local amateur tournaments. Moorer won the 139-pound Junior Olympic title in Weirton at the Thomas E. Millsop Community Center. Then-U.S. Rep. Allan Mollohan, D-Fairmont, donated the trophies and was on hand for the events that night. Proceeds benefited the largest ESOP in the history of the ...

Library meetings are much calmer

To the editor: There’s an air of calm that finally can be felt during meetings of the board of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County. It’s an atmosphere not felt since July 2022. That’s when a small group of ultra -conservative, traditional Catholics decided that they were offended by books geared toward the LGBTQIA+ community and began a campaign to have them removed from the library system. What followed were petition drives, slurs against gay and trans people and yelling, lots of yelling. Our local chapter of the National Organization for Women, also ...

The flag fund was started by Mayor Bob Wilson shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, attack on America and has continued since.
