Concerns about the homeless

To the editor: As a resident of downtown Steubenville and someone who has had the privilege of offering Bible studies and other programs at our city’s homeless shelters for several years, I was encouraged by the City Council’s interest in finding good solutions for those who live in precarious and often difficult circumstances. However, I was concerned by the tone of some of the reported comments, which seemed to frame “the homeless” as a problem to be solved rather than recognizing them as individuals, each with unique stories and struggles. I deeply appreciate that ...

Women’s equality still elusive

To the editor: Do you remember the old commercials for Virginia Slims cigarettes? The slogan in their jingle was, “You’ve come a long way, baby.” Well, they lied. Thanks to what’s called second wave feminism in the 1960s and 1970s, women made some great strides, but those have been overshadowed by the rise of the patriarchy, which continues to push back against women’s rights. When it comes to those rights, the sure path to guarantee constitutional equality for women is to publish the already-ratified Equal Rights Amendment into the Constitution as the 28th amendment. ...

It’s the economy

To the editor: Democrat strategist James Carville once stated, “It’s the economy, stupid.” Kamala Harris supported Joe Biden’s failed policies and will continue those policies if elected. She was the tie-breaking vote for the Inflation Reduction Act, which was an abysmal failure and authorized the IRS to aggressively tax tips. Inflation increased significantly after the Inflation Reduction Act passed. Her economic policy to date is to quit taxing tips, which Trump proposed in June; a new parent tax benefit of $6,000 after Vance proposed a $5,000 tax benefit; Soviet-era price ...

Commissioner ready to serve

To the editor: Residents of Jefferson County, it has truly been an honor to serve as your county commissioner for the past three and a half years. I am excited to have the opportunity to continue to serve and would very much appreciate your vote for me, Republican candidate Tony Morelli, this Nov 5. I have been blessed to meet so many of you and look forward to meeting more of you in the next four years. During my time in office, I am proud of the accomplishments we have made together. There is still much to do but we are moving forward together. Some of the notable achievements ...

Trump shows ignorance of law

To the editor: Recently, Democrat presidential candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris campaigned in Aliquippa, Pa. A week before, I attended the St. Rocco Festival in Aliquippa. The religious procession with a band on the hilltop was well attended. Each family proudly held banners of past family members. Various homes placed tables in front with wine, beer, liquor, homemade cookies and sandwiches. The procession ended at the Italian Musical and Political Club. Food and drink were provided for free. After the parade, I thought I would explore Aliquippa, since I remembered ...

More questions about Harris

To the editor: Unemployment in June was 4.1 percent, and in July it was 4.3 percent. Only 114,000 new jobs were created, thousands of which were part time — not the 175,000 expected. Fool us once with Biden, shame on you. Fool us twice, with Harris, shame on us. Some slogans for the Harris’ campaign: “You think Biden was awful, deceitful? I’m just as good” and “Biden is clueless, I don’t have a clue.” For three years Harris promised us President Joe Biden was sharp as a tack. It was a blatant lie. What else is she lying about? Harris has several websites: She has ...
