Concerts a cooperative effort

To the editor: As the 18th-annual Fort Steuben Summer Concert Series has come to an end, the staff and volunteers of Historic Fort Steuben wish to thank all the sponsors and attendees for another wonderful season of free live music in the Ohio Valley. Even the weather cooperated this year allowing us to add a bonus concert last Thursday. Planning for the concerts begins in February with suggestions and recommendations from survey results and friends. Rick Witkowski of Studio L and Earl Tuttle of Ohio Valley Audio work with our volunteers to develop a diverse and entertaining ...

In appreciation of community days

To the editor: I attended this year’s Follansbee Community Days Festival as I have for most, if not all, of the 30 years it’s been in existence. I was saddened to hear that this year would be the last one. Since I’ve always been a fan of live music, I took advantage of seeing the many top-notch groups that came to provide entertainment each year. I was never disappointed. I don’t know the reasons behind the decision to discontinue this long-running event, but I’m sure it took an enormous amount of planning, financial backing and many behind-the-scene workers to make it ...

What a difference a day makes

To the editor: Kamala Harris is not just a political figure, she has become a cultural figure. Millions of teenage voters are learning about her through Tik Tok. The voters between the ages of 18 and 34 who once felt they had no real choice given both presidential candidates were two old white men and out of touch with this generation are anticipating an election day where they feel that someone is running who believes in a future in which they can look forward. Don’t underestimate Gen Z and millennial voters. They helped elect Biden in 2020 and now that they have new hope with ...

EGCC — questions remain unanswered

To the editor: Recently, Gov. Mike DeWine appointed a conservator to oversee the dissolution of Eastern Gateway Community College. There are, I believe, a few questions that still need answered. Faculty, staff and students (and their families), as well as supportive community members, need to know how our college arrived at this sad juncture. We’ve heard the stories of misused federal Pell Grants. We are aware of administrative decisions that emphasized growing the college to the detriment of academic integrity. We know these things. Questions that remain however, include: ...

An easy choice in November

To the editor: This past week, Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic Party nominee for president of the United States, chose Tim Walz as her running mate. Walz is a highly respected and well-loved governor from the state of Minnesota. A former schoolteacher who was respected and loved by his students and fellow faculty, he’s also a veteran who served our country with distinction and valor. Harris made this choice from several strong options. Among them, Josh Shapiro, a popular governor of Pennsylvania, a swing state which could’ve helped lock up that state’s 19 electoral ...

Saline Township says thank you

To the editor: The Saline Township Trustees, the Hammondsville Church and Boy Scout Troop 49 would like to express their appreciation to the JB Green Team for the polywood picnic tables with benches we were able to purchase with the Community Recycle Grants they awarded. The tables are the beginning of our new community outdoor green space at the complex, Thank you, Jefferson County commissioners, for the parks and recreation grant to purchase basketball hoops, sports equipment and to line our basketball and pickleball courts. This is a wonderful asset for our complex, to house so ...
