Records broken at Dick Dei Track Classic
WHEELING — Saturday at Wheeling Park High School, several track athletes made their marks in the record books at the 49th Dick Dei Track Classic, where teams across Ohio and West Virginia competed for the gold. There were four meet records set Saturday, and multiple local competitors who rose above the pack.
Olentangy Liberty claimed first place in the boys competition, finishing with 127 points as a team. Host Wheeling Park finished in sixth with 53 points.
University claimed first in the girls side with a 127-point total. Wheeling Park finished as runners-up with 86.5 points. Linsly finished tied with Claymont in eighth place with 39 points.
Among the crew of locals that found gold-medal finishes, Brooke’s Marcus Reed took the top spot in the boys discus throw with a 147-05 throw.
“It wasn’t a PR,” Aaron Buterbaugh, Brooke’s throwing coach, said of his senior. “This is right around where he’s been throwing so far this year. We’re not quite to the distance that we were last year, but we always have trouble throwing at this event. So for him to come in and make a big throw and win the event is definitely a win for us at this tournament.”
“Matter of fact, I think last year he may have lost on the last throw here, and then finally he won, so it’s nice for him to come in and be a little bit more dominant where he doesn’t have to worry about that.”
Martins Ferry’s Alanna Williams continued her dominance on the track with first-place finishes in the girls 1600-meter run and 800-meter run.
The senior ran the 800 in 2:13.42, and the 1600 in 5:04.96.
“To double at this meet, that’s fantastic,” Martins Ferry head coach Greg Steele said. “You very seldom see anybody double unless it’s in a sprint. And for her to double in 8 and 16, especially when they were that close together, that just shows you the type of runner she is. And to be honest with you, speaking to her, you’d never know how good she is because she never talks about herself. She’s probably one of the nicest people you ever meet in your life.
“She placed second to the girl from Olentangy Liberty in the 16 last year, and that was her best time of the year. I think it was a wake-up call that she had another gear and she was able to go a little faster. Then it started getting faster and faster last year. Then she qualified for the Nationals and placed in the top 15 in both at the Nationals in Philadelphia.”
In her final time competing at the Dick Dei, Steele was glad to see his senior show out.
“Fantastic. And we’re looking forward to a lot of greater things,” Steele said. “The state has changed its format. We’re going from three divisions to five, so there’s only three regions per division. We go to Austintown-Fitch, and I think she’ll have a little different competition than she did out in Muskingum because of the way they rearranged everything. So we’re looking forward to it. Hopefully she can double and make it to the state- all the girls are fighting to be on that 4Ö8 and 4Ö4. ’cause they know that she can lead them to the promised land. So hopefully that’s the case this year.”
Linsly’s Jakob Schmidt-Weigand placed first in the boys’ side of the 800-meter run, clocking a 1:57.81.
The senior also set a school record in the 1600-meter run with a 4:25.51, good for second place Saturday. Linsly head coach Dave Plumby said he wasn’t certain if the 800-meter was a school record, but he thought it’d be close.
“He had probably the best double that any Linsly distance runner has ever run,” Plumby said. “He’s a great student athlete. He comes from Germany. He’s been with Linsly for a couple years. He’s a great worker. He’s one of our tri-captains. He’s a great kid.
“I think it was great, especially after the school record he got in the 1600. He went out, he competed, he knows what his strengths are, and he’s a very strong, fit runner. He saved it to the end and was able to come through with victory.”
The hosting Wheeling Park Patriots’ girls team did well to finish as meet runners-up, highlighted by their gold-medal 4Ö100-meter relay team of Molly Brinker, K’Lyn Neider, Julia Dunaway and Rianna Farrow. The quartet ran a 50.66.
“It’s nice to get [gold] here,” Wheeling Park girls coach Andy Fletcher said. “They did a really good job going forward. At the beginning of the season, they were kind of gelling together. Still got some more time to take off, because they’re still working on handoffs and that sort of thing,
But they did a really good job today.”
Dunaway also finished second in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash. Brinker finished in second in the 100-meter high hurdles.
“It’s nice seeing that from those two,” Fletcher said. “And then we’ve got our juniors like K’Lyn and our freshman Rianna Farrow. They’re pulling a lot of points in for us. Riley Perry did well in our throws. We had new pole vaulters that are coming in that are starting to do well for us- Niki Robitaille, one of our juniors, came in third in the high jump. We looked pretty solid.”
Fletcher said Saturday was a meet that his team looks forward to every year.
“It’s nice having the teams that come in every year, so it’s a little bit different from what we usually have competitive-wise,” Fletcher said. “And just to see the kids go against other teams that they’re not used to, that’s always good for them because when we go against the same teams time after time after time, it kind of gets a little bit duller. So we bring in some fresher teams and they’re able to- kids kind of get out of their heads because they’re seeing people that they’re not used to.”
There are four new meet high-marks after Saturday. Ponitz CTC’s Sifa Mlebinge set a new meet record in the girls long jump with a leap of 18-01.5. Ponitz teammate Lucia Malilo also made a new meet record in the girls 300-meter hurdles with a time of 45.52. Olentangy Liberty’s Carter Sullivan set a new meet record in the boys long jump with a 23-00.25. Spring Mills’ McKenna Mullin reset the record books in the girls pole vault with a 11-foot jump.
