Big Red sweeps Shadyside relays

Five meet records were broken, with Steubenville setting four new marks and Martins Ferry’s Alanna Williams eclipsing the fifth among her three first-place finishes.
BOYS
Big Red won seven events to pile up 100 points as Ziare Scurry set two individual records and anchored a relay team to another. The junior broke the 200-meter record of 21.7 seconds set in 1998 by Linsly’s Eddie Drummond when he timed out in 21.67. He also broke his own 400-meter mark of 49.45 set last year when he finished in 48.77. He also ran the final leg on the 4×200 that clocked out in 1:30.49, breaking the old mark of 1:31.66 set by a Steubenville team that season that included Scurry and Colton Henderson. This year’s foursome consisted of Terahji Thompson, Henderson, Josiah Rea and Scurry.
Henderson ran 10.92 to claim the 100 and Thompson captured the 300 low hurdles with a time of 41.44. Rea prevailed in the 100 high hurdles with a clocking of 15.24.

The final title came in the 4×400 as Thompson, Jude Kimble, Rea and Chemier Adams clocked out in 3:38.73.
Linsly’s Jakob Schmidt-Weigand and Edison’s Andrew Kirkman were double winners. Schmidt-Weigand won the 800 (2:03.0) and the 1600 (4:39.44), while Kirkman took the long jump with a leap of 20-feet, 2.5-inches and ran the opening leg of the 4×100 Relay which included DaMyus Rambsel, Williams Norris and Brett Worrels. Their time was 45.18.
The Wildcats were also victorious in the 4×800 Relay as Kenny Farnworth, Isaiah Filburn, Liam Westfall and Charles Hoobler circled the track eight times in 8:45.90.
Steubenville Central finished with a pair of champions as Cash Dobson won the 3200 in 10:54.52 and James McInnis leaped 6-4 to take the high jump.
Shadyside’s Jaycob Trigg won the pole vault with a leap of 13-feet, while Bellaire’s Kayse Rejonis put the shot 51-feet. Garaway’s Braxton Speed was the lone non-OVAC athlete to win a title when he hurled the discus 139-10.

Edison finished second in the team race with 76, followed by Weir (63), Bellaire (59) and Garaway (58).
GIRLS
Williams has carried on from last spring when she was a two-time all-Ohioan as she won the 800 (2:25.03), the 1600 (5:29.77) and set a new record in the 3200 (11:03.27) that she won by 52-seconds. The old meet record was 11:05.82 set by Shadyside’s Tara Tollett in 2012.
Steubenville’s Kaycee King earned four first-place finishes, including two individual as she sprinted to titles in the 100 (12.68) and 200 (26.67). She also anchored the 4×100 and 4×200 teams that ran 51.52 and 1:48.47, respectively.
The 4×100 also included Laila Reed, Nylah McShan and Sydney Reed, while Adrianna Crabtree, McShan and Laila Reed made up the 4×200.

Steubenville’s Bri Hudson set a new mark in the discus when she hurled the platter 143-foot, one foot better than Caldwell’s Gwyn Lori did in 2024.
Buckeye Local’s Jenna Delvecchio dominated the hurdles, winning the highs in 15.37 and the lows in 48.59.
Edison’s Lacie Pelley and Josioe Lesnansky were double winners, as well. Pelley claimed the 400 in 1:02.13 and anchored the Wildcats’ 4×400 Relay that timed out in 4:21.16. Other team members were Molly King, Aliya Glover and Josie Lesnansky, while Lesnansky teamed with Annie Board, Mayelee Rawson and Lydia Krepps to win the 4×800 in 10:27.92.
Shadyside had a trio of first-place finishers in Gabby Kosky, Kaci Tsoras and Jaylynne Johnson. Kosky won the high jump with a leap of 5-feet, while Tsoras soared 11-feet to win the pole vault. Johnson went 15-6.75 to win the long jump.
Bellaire’s Alyson Vingia heaved the shot put 36-9.25 for first place.
Steubenville totalled 75.5 to narrowly slip by Edison’s 71.5. Shadyside took third with 66, followed by Martins Ferry and River with 54 and 51, respectively.
MEET NOTE
Prior to the opening ceremonies, longtime Shadyside Relays official Donna Joseph was presented an award for her dedicated service. She has been involved in all 55 events.
