Another big inning lifts Wildcats over Brooke
WELLSBURG – Big innings led to big wins resulting in a perfect week for the Edison softball team, and the Wildcats capped off the week with one more big inning leading to one more big win.
Edison plated four runs in the top of the third inning against Brooke, and the Wildcats withstood a late charge by the Bruins en route to a 5-4 victory Saturday afternoon on the road.
The four-run fourth was the 12th inning of the week the Wildcats plated multiple runs in an inning, and it was the fifth time they plated at least four runs in one.
Trailing 5-1 in the sixth, the Bruins recorded three runs to pull within 5-4, however, Brooke was unable to complete the comeback for the second time in less than 24 hours as a double play erased the tying run at third and the go-ahead run at second.
The Bruins had one final chance to score in the seventh and the hosts managed to get the tying run on base, however, the hosts hit into another inning-ending double play to end the game.
Brooke trailed East Liverpool, 7-0, Friday evening at home before the Bruins responded by scoring the final eight runs to rally past the past Potters, 8-7. The Bruins gave it another good shot Saturday against Edison, however, the team ended up coming up a little bit short.
Bristol Leanza picked up the win inside the circle for the Wildcats (12-5). The senior struck out five while walking three.
Avery Rado took the loss for Brooke (9-12). She struck out three without walking a batter.
The Wildcats outhit the Bruins by just one hit, 10-9, however, the Silver-and-Black collected four extra-base hits on their way to the win, while the Bruins did not have one.
Individually for Edison, shortstop Sophia Henderson produced a single, a double and two RBI, Alivia Hanlin tallied a triple and an RBI and Mady Cornell contributed two singles and a double. Also, Brea Shrieve recorded a double and an RBI, Abby Boka collected a single and an RBI and Bella Cronin and Chloe Peckens each ended up with a single.
For Brooke, Jaz Wood, Emma Michel and Avery Martino all tallied a single and an RBI, Maggie Diserio and Rado each delivered a pair of singles and Eden McKinney and Emma Bober each contributed a base hit.
Edison struck first with a run in the first. Boka reached on an error with one out, and the third baseman scored on a triple to right by Hanlin to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead. Rado was able to get out of the inning without allowing another run as she recorded a strikeout and a groundout to prevent any further damage.
The Bruins answered right back in the home half of the inning. McKinney drew a walk with one out, and she moved up to second on a single by Rado. Both runners advanced on a passed ball before Wood singled to center scoring McKinney to knot the score at 1-1. Like Rado before her, Leanza retired the next two batters to end the threat without allowing the home team to take the lead.
Neither team scored in the next two innings before the Wildcats erupted four runs in the fourth. Cornell singled with one out, and she scored on Shrieve’s double to left to regain the lead for Edison at 2-1. Leanza came in to run for Shrieve, and Paige Sommerville was hit by a pitch to put a pair of runners on base. A flyout resulted in the second out, and Brooke had a chance to limit the damage to only one run, however, Henderson singled to left scoring Leanza and Sommerville after both moved up on a passed ball to increase the Wildcats advantage to 4-1. Henderson then stole second, and scored on a single by Boka to extend Edison’s advantage to 5-1 before a strikeout ended the inning.
Brooke got a runner on in the bottom of the inning, but Gabby Hornick, who reached on an error with two outs, was stranded after Leanza induced a pop-up.
The victors had an opportunity to add to their lead in the fifth as Peckens and Cornell singled to put two runners on base, however, Rado was able to get out of the inning unscathed thanks to a lineout and a groundout keeping her team within striking distance.
The Bruins had a golden opportunity to cut into their deficit in their half of the inning, however, they were unable to come up with a clutch hit with runners on base. After a groundout, Diserio, McKinney and Rado all singled to load the bases, however, Leanza retired the next two batters on lineouts to end the threat and the inning without giving up a run.
Henderson doubled with one out in the sixth for Edison, but the senior standout was stranded following a pair of pop-ups.
After multiple failed opportunities, Brooke broke through in the sixth with a trio of runs.
Bober singled to start the inning, and Hornick walked to put a pair of runners on base. After the runners moved up on a passed ball, Michel singled to left to score Bober to cut Brooke’s deficit down to 5-2. Hornick took third on the play as Michel moved up to second on the throw. Hornick then scored on a wild pitch to pull the Bruins to within 5-3 before Martino singled to center scoring Michel to make it a 5-4 ballgame. Diserio then delivered a single enabling Martino to move up to second, however, Leanza was able to bear down and get out of the inning thanks to a strikeout and a double play to keep Edison out in front by one run.
Cronin singled to start the seventh for Edison, but Rado retired the next three batters on a flyout and a pair of groundouts to keep her team within a run.
Down to their last chance, the Bruins got a runner on base to lead off the seventh as Wood drew a five-pitch walk, however, Leanza prevented Brooke from making anything out of the opportunity as she struck out the next batter before getting a game-ending double play.
The win enabled the Wildcats to sweep the season series from the Bruins. Edison defeated Brooke, 14-7, March 24 at home out at the Edison Unified Sports Complex.
The victory also capped a 5-0 week for the Wildcats after Edison suffered through an 0-4 week the week before.
The win was Edison’s second in less than 24 hours as the Wildcats went on the road and defeated Cambridge, 13-3, in six innings to defeat the Bobcats for the second time in the week.
Edison used three pitchers as Leanza started and pitched the first two innings. She struck out one and walked two. Hanlin pitched the next three recording one strikeout and two walks before Gwen Stine pitched the sixth. Stine struck out one without walking a batter.
Offensively, the Wildcats tallied 13 runs on 12 hits -seven of which went for extra bases, including a pair of home runs.
Individually, Boka belted a single and two home runs finishing with five RBI to lead the way for the locals. Also, Cronin contributed two doubles and two RBI, Peckens produced two singles and three RBI and Henderson ended up with a single, a triple and an RBI. Finally, Sommerville singled, doubled and had an RBI, and Teagan Reynolds recorded a double and an RBI.
Edison led 5-1 after one inning and 7-2 after two. Both teams scored a run in the fifth to make it an 8-3 ballgame before the Wildcats erupted for five more runs in the fifth to build a 10-run advantage. The Bobcats failed to score in their half of the inning bringing the game to an end.
Edison defeated Cambridge, 12-2, in five innings Tuesday at home before also defeating Wheeling Central (7-6) Wednesday on the road and Weir (10-5) Thursday at home.
Edison is scheduled to play East Liverpool at 5 p.m. today up at Patterson Field.
Brooke is slated to play Catholic Central at 6 p.m. today at home.
