Golden Bears have a big game on the road with playoff implications

BLACKSVILLE — Oak Glen has a big trip to close its regular season — and needs to win to make sure it’s not their last game.

The Golden Bears (7-2) travel to 7-1 Clay-Battelle in their regular season finale on Friday night, and the stakes could not be higher.

Oak Glen enters the week No. 13 in the Class AA rankings. The top 16 qualify for the playoffs. And, the race is tight as positions 9-20 are separated by less than 2.5 percentage points.

There will be a lot of points on the line should the Golden Bears win, as the Cee-Bees are ranked No. 3 in Class A.

Win or lose, the Bears will be idle in the final week of the regular season with their scheduled bye week and only able to scoreboard watch as the playoff field is set. That scoreboard watching will be a lot more comfortable with a win Friday night in Blacksville.

The teams have not played any common opponents this season and did not play one another last year.

The Cee-Bees have wins in each of their last seven games, bouncing back from an opening night loss at Cameron to climb the rankings. They average 40.1 points per game and allow just an average of 13.

Oak Glen has shown it can score, too, averaging 31.6 per game and allowing just 12.4.

With senior standout Logan Murray (1,388 total yards, 14 touchdowns) out of the lineup against East Liverpool last week, freshman Jacob Everett stepped up in a big way with 278 yards and three scores on 26 carries. He has 646 yards and five TDs on the season.

Sophomore QB Maddox Bowen has tossed for 756 yards and 13 scores with eight picks, rushing for another 109 and three scores.

While Murray leads the team in receiving yards (252), Cam Carter is the leading receiver with 12 catches.

The opening kick Friday night at Clay Battelle Stadium in Monongalia County is set for 7 p.m.
