Wildcats look to bounce back in first trip on the road
SALINEVILLE — The Edison football team is looking to bounce back this week after suffering a heartbreaking loss last week to Carrollton.
The Wildcats trailed the Warriors, 10-0, in the third quarter before closing to within 16-14 in the fourth quarter. Edison had the ball with a chance to win the game, however, an interception ended that drive and Carrollton was able to run out the clock to secure the victory out at the Edison Unified Sports Complex.
“Defensively, we played pretty well,” first-year Edison (1-1) head coach Anthony Pierro said. “We had some missed assignments here and there. Offensively, we just shot ourselves in the foot in the first half. We had a bad snap. We had some turnovers. We had missed opportunities.
“When we watched the film, one thing that really stood out was how our kids responded. They responded and played well. We gave ourselves a chance, but we did not execute at the end. The kids worked really hard. I have to give them credit.”
This week, Edison is set to renew its rivalry with Southern Local. Kick off is set for 7 p.m. Friday night up at Wigwam Stadium.
“Our main priority this week is to stop the run,” Pierro said. “We did a pretty good job against the run last week, but we are going to have to do a better job this week.”
Southern enters this week’s matchup coming off a 36-22 loss to Shadyside at home. The Indians ran for 184 yards and two touchdowns in the loss to the Tigers.
Landen Heffner led the way offensively for Southern as he ran for 155 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. He also ran for a 2-point conversion while also returning a kick off 86 yards for a touchdown.
“I did not think we tackled too bad last week, but we are going to have to do a better job of tackling this week,” Pierro said.
Edison opened the season with a 35-14 victory against Shenandoah, and the Wildcats are looking to put last week’s loss behind them as they get ready to take on the Indians on the road.
“The kids have stuck together,” Pierro said. “We are going to see how the team responds after last week’s loss.”
Southern opened the season with a 34-0 loss to Toronto on the road at Clarke Hinkle Field.
“They run a 4-4 with a Cover 3,” Pierro said about the Indians’ defense. “Their safeties come down hard.”
The Indians have yet to complete a pass this season.
On the other side, the Wildcats are looking to get a strong performance from their quarterback – JD Henderson.
“He knows he did not play his best game last week,” Pierro said. “We are going to try and get him some easy reads.”
The Silver and Black are in good shape health-wise going into this week’s game.
“We have the normal bumps and bruises,” Pierro said. “We don’t have anything major. We are going to continue to condition and lift. We have some soreness, but we want to keep getting stronger.”
Zack Almy is in his first season as head coach of the Indians.
“We’re going to have to start the game fast and physical,” Pierro said. “We want to set the tone. We want to get off to a good start on offense. We are going to need to play a clean game. What we do in practice is going to have to translate over to the game.”
The Wildcats defeated the Indians, 42-24, last season at home.
“We want to be 2-0, but we are 1-1,” Pierro said. “We play a tough schedule. We have some big games coming up that can change the season for us.”
