Red Knights come home 3-0 to battle Newcomerstown

TORONTO — The Toronto football team has passed all three tests so far, but the Red Knights face their toughest one yet this week.

Toronto defeated rival Wellsville, 49-19, last Friday night up at Nicholson Stadium as the Red Knights and Tigers renewed their longtime rivalry.

“It went well,” Toronto (3-0) head coach Jaret Aubiel said about the game. “We executed the gameplan. A lot of kids got experience. It was a good night.”

This week, Toronto welcomes Newcomerstown (2-1) to Clarke Hinkle Field as the Red Knights and Trojans are set to meet at 7 p.m. Friday night

“They run a double tight wishbone,” Aubiel said about Newcomerstown. “The kids have bought in. The community has bought in. They have got a great coach. They are going to be a huge challenge for us.”

Newcomerstown enters this week coming off a 52-20 victory against Conotton Valley last week on the road.

“Defensively, they are fast and physical,” Aubiel said. “They have some good athletes on that side of the ball. Their defense is going to cause us some issues. They are going to be a good challenge for us. We are excited about it.”

Newcomerstown opened the season with a 21-12 loss to Crooksville at home before defeating Harrison Central, 28-21, also at home.

“They are a pretty big team,” Aubiel said. “They have some good athletes on the offensive line.”

The two teams met last season with the Trojans coming out on top by a score of 34-6.

“They have a good mix of experienced and newer guys,” Aubiel said. “They do what they do. They are going to make it tough on us.”

In its first two weeks of the season, Toronto shut out Southern Local, 34-0, at home before going on the road and defeating Lowellville, 34-6.

“We are going to have to execute our gameplan and play a clean football game,” Aubiel said. “Hopefully, if we do that, it will result in us coming out on the winning side.”

The Red Knights and Trojans are both in Ohio Division VI, Region 23. Toronto is currently in eighth place in the rankings, while the Trojans are in 10th place.

“It is nice to be playing in front of our home crowd,” Aubiel said. “Our crowd gives us energy. It is nice to be playing on our home field.”
