History in the Hills: Looking at our stuff

This past week was fall clean-up in Weirton, and my family certainly took advantage of that opportunity. I really hate to get rid of good things that still could be used. We tried our best to donate as much as possible, but sometimes, things just wear out, break and outlive their useful life. I am a collector and a saver, so I usually strip something down to its bare bones and save anything useful from something before trashing it. As a result of all this saving, I have amassed a collection of screws, nuts, bolts, washers, boards, trim, wires and scraps of various origins, just in case ...

Library deserves a ‘yes’ vote

To the editor: I love libraries, especially our local Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County. When I talk to different people in the area, I am heartened by how many also have an appreciation of how lucky we are to have seven branches (soon to be eight) and a bookmobile serving our community. On the other hand, I am often dismayed at how many people are unfamiliar with all of the ways that the library can enhance their lives. Oh, sure, everyone knows that you can check out books, movies and music CDs. Many people know that you can also access online resources like audio ...

The price of lies

To the editor: Diabolical, meaning characteristic of the devil, is the category of lying that is habitual of mainstream media which covers for, and goes along with, the Democrat Party ideology. It propagates the selected ideological system of beliefs, talking points, agendas and practices which serve the party of which these are the brain-child. This is reminiscent of the Devil’s lie in Genesis, using the twisted truth to deceive Adam and Eve. The media narrative has cleverly created a world of true principles and noble ideas subtly woven together with falsehoods, constantly ...

To the editor: I am writing to formally express my strong endorsement of Carlo Capaldi for the position of city manager of Steubenville. Capaldi has devoted more than three decades of exemplary service to the city of Steubenville, including his distinguished tenure as a firefighter and fire chief. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated exceptional leadership, integrity and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of our community. His extensive experience within city operations has provided him with a comprehensive understanding of how our municipal systems function and how ...

It’s “perfect”ly fine to just be good enough ...

We all strive to make every situation perfect, don’t we? We try so hard to make our life the best that it can be. But we have to realize that nothing is perfect, and “good enough” is good enough. When we are born, our parents immediately begin to instill in us all types of values. We are taught to be honest. We are told to be kind. We are instructed to sit up straight. We are reminded to always use the terms “please” and “thank you.” That one is something my grandson, Layne, has been doing since he first started to try saying words. We learn how we should ...

Be proactive in cancer fight

Pink is a prevalent color around our communities this time of year — it serves as a reminder that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. One in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer in her lifetime, according to medical experts, and the most significant risk factors for breast cancer are gender — being a woman — and growing older. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States, with the exception of skin cancers, and accounts for 30 percent of all new female cancers each year. Only lung cancer kills ...
