Mediocrity over exceptionalism

To the editor: Democrats choose mediocrity over exceptionalism. I believe Democrats are honest, I also believe in Bigfoot. Democrats don’t want to save humanity, they want to rule it. It’s time we all take offense and action against those deciding what should offend us. People are starting to realize woke means you’re an idiot. Think Bud Lite and Target. The NAACP issued a warning that it may be dangerous traveling in Florida. They’re silent about visiting safe Chicago. Leon Russell, chairmen of NAACP, lives in Tampa. How much should descendants of 360,000 Union soldiers ...

Our Place says thank you

To the editor: Our Place Activity and Resource Center 50-Plus would like to thank the Rev. Jason Elliott of First Westminster Presbyterian Church for having the insight to see the need for a senior ministry. The grand opening on June 6 was a huge success and proved the need for additional senior services in the local area. Our Place is a community activity and resource center designed for adults 50 and older who want to have fun, be active, stay healthy and be informed. We have had a tremendous amount of support from the local community, senior service agencies, media and ...

Big Red softball team leads way

To the editor: I would like to congratulate coach Gus DiMarzio and the 2023 Steubenville Big Red girls softball team on the program’s first regional championship and trip to the final four. Although Steubenville High School’s girls track teams have enjoyed past successes at the state level, Big Red’s other girls sports teams had not won a regional title until this year. Championship teams are led by great players such as Jules King. Every girl athlete in the Steubenville City School system should take note of her accomplishments and work to attain her level of greatness. ...

Catfish not a good choice

To the editor: First my hometown had murals. Then came the nutcrackers. And now? Catfish. Buffalo has statues of mighty American bison; another town has squirrels — which admittedly, can be cute — but Steubenville? Why, Steubenville has big, ugly, bottom-feeding catfish. Though the lowly catfish can be tasty when freshly caught and properly prepared, there is no way around it: It remains one of the ugliest critters God ever made. I agree that Steubenville should promote its unique history to increase civic pride and boost tourist appeal, but is having a giant catfish ...

My tributaries sustain me

To the editor: When I needed to belong and needed fed, Wills Creek gave me sanctuary, held my hand and a family. To the hills and bends of Wills Creek, I offer refuge and I’m here because of you. When I needed protection and something in which to believe, Yellow Creek gave me heroes and hope. To the friends and families along Yellow Creek, I remember and I honor you. When I questioned my faith and felt rejected, Cross Creek found the light inside me and fueled its enlightenment. To the vestries along Cross Creek, I worship and flare because of you. When I was stagnant and lost, ...

Vote no on Issue 1

To the editor: Aug. 8 will prove to be a very important day in Ohio history. The results of that day’s special election will determine how Ohioans are granted power at the ballot box. What happens on that day will determine if 40 percent of the state’s population will dictate to the other 60 percent of the population how we should govern ourselves and live our lives. Issue 1, which will be the sole issue on the Aug. 8 ballot, basically states the following: Any voter initiative must receive 60 percent support in order to pass. That is a monumental number to get to if you want ...
