Mamdani election an anathema

To the editor: There is a story of a mock election in a third-grade school class. Three candidates were vying to become class president. One promised to paint the walls and hang pictures; the second one promised colorful chalk and a bigger blackboard; the third one just promised “free ice cream.” Guess who won? Not one kid asked, “How do we pay for the ice cream?” The New York Democrats and populus who voted for Mamdani underscore the perversion of our democracy. In the 6th century BC, in the cradle of democracy, in ancient Greece, only citizens born in Athens were ...

What’s behind GOP humiliation?

To the editor: After listening to plaintive responses as to why the GOP lost elections held in New York, Maryland and Virginia, I’m at a loss as to why these frustrated elephants can’t fathom the real reason for their humiliating defeats. The elections I speak of are the mayorship of New York city and the governorships of Maryland and Virginia. Repeatedly and ad nauseam we hear flawed messages from GOP political strategists, viz., a less-than-expected turnout on the part of their constituents, not to mention voting irregularities favoring their opponents. These claims might ...

Why don’t the rules apply?

To the editor Just a thought: Why has the shelter roof gone unrepaired for six years? No personal property would be allowed to go that long being in an unsafe condition. I guess rules don’t apply to the city-owned property. Christopher Tarr Steubenville

What side are you on

To the editor: While 700,000 people of Arizona are without a duly elected representative, Adelita Grijalva, because the house speaker, Mike Johnson, refuses to swear her in, the entire nation suffers through a government lockdown. She will be the deciding vote that would bring the Epstein Files investigation to the forefront. Instead, Johnson has closed the House doors and given representatives a paid leave to keep them from their work. While the Republican representatives stay away, the Democrats are showing up each week. What many do not understand is that this Continuing Resolution ...

Where is Franciscan University?

To the editor: As cold weather approaches, Steubenville faces some crucial decisions. Where will the homeless seek shelter and where will they find food? The federal government has cut funding for the city’s shelter and eliminated food benefits for the most vulnerable. This Republican administration has no plans to help the needy. Their focus seems to be on constructing that “one big, beautiful” ballroom at the White House. By the way… none of us knows how long it will take to build that thing, or whether the billionaires and millionaires who have promised to chip in on ...

Regarding the Urban Mission

To the editor: Surely, the Urban Mission was aware in advance of the lack of funds it needed to continue to keep the shelters open. Somebody, anybody and nobody. There was an important job to be done. Everybody was sure somebody would do it. Anybody could do it and nobody did. The bottom line is that everybody blamed somebody when nobody did what anybody could have. Well, somebody get busy. Open the church basement — take the beds from the shelter and Martha Manor and set them up in the basement. Memory serves there’s a kitchen there. You have that box truck — use it to move ...
