Be patient — we’ll be winners

To the editor: Many people are expressing frustration that President Donald Trump has not fulfilled all of his campaign promises. Prices are still high on many products, including energy and groceries. No one seems to be giving an explanation about why these issues have not been resolved. I think that I can explain this situation by comparing it with house flipping. People who flip houses buy dilapidated, abandoned houses at low prices. From their initial inspections, they develop a plan which includes the amount of time it will take to flip the house and the money needed for the ...

Questions about diocese remain

To the editor: The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops held a meeting from Nov. 10-13 and on the agenda was the fate of the Diocese of Steubenville. Since the closing of Holy Name Cathedral in 2008, and the destruction of the diocese in the years that followed, nothing was done by the hierarchy to investigate what Bishops Daniel Conlon and Jeffrey Monforton were doing. For those that do not know, a bishop, once appointed to their position by the pope, is the sole person in charge of the workings of the Diocese: This includes all churches, schools, cemeteries and properties. All are ...

Natural gas helps keep Ohioans warm

To the editor: With the cold front coming in and temperatures dropping quickly across the state, Ohioans need reliable and affordable energy to stay warm. Our state’s essential natural gas provides the dependable power for furnaces and heat pumps. With over 63 percent of Ohio residents relying on it for home heating, natural gas is the most dependable energy source for keeping families safe and warm through the holidays. The state benefits from a reliable supply, thanks to production in the Shale Crescent region. The Shale Crescent region, encompassing Ohio, Pennsylvania and ...

Trumpism is on the line

To the editor: How is it that the current president of our great nation, Donald J. Trump, had elected to be AWOL during the recent federal government shutdown, which was the largest in our history, as he chose to decide to spend much of his time partying at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and playing golf, seemingly endlessly, while the people of our nation continued to be deprived of benefits to which they were entitled, while he personally exhibited a total lack of compassion for those who were suffering? Also, why did this man (Trump) continue to not get more personally ...

Library still a special place

To the editor: I was pleased to see the successful renewal levy for the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County. I was not pleased to see the close vote. I was raised in Follansbee and my mother would routinely bring us across the river to the downtown library. She believed there was a whole world to discover and imagine while reading books. The building itself was magical to us. The stone steps leading to the main entrance seemed huge and the stairway outside leading down to the kids’ section felt secretive and special as a child — a magical place that was open to ...

A true medical professional

To the editor: In recent weeks, I experienced several severe and profuse nosebleeds that required multiple trips to the emergency room. After being told by several ENT offices that it would take three weeks to get an appointment, I was fortunate to be referred to Dr. Jeffrey Banyas at WVU Medicine-Weirton Medical Center. From the very first phone call, Banyas’s office staff was exceptionally helpful, kind and accommodating. They were able to schedule me within just two hours of my call — something almost unheard of these days. Banyas, himself, was personable, understanding ...
