Don’t allow whims of conscience

To the editor: In my last letter, I wrote about how the abortion issue isn’t so easily sussed as right-to-lifers want us all to assume (“Of trolleys and forced birth,” Oct. 1.) I used such terms as ectopic pregnancy, anencephaly and hydranencephaly, the definitions of which some may be unaware. If you are unfamiliar with the terms, once you’ve researched them you may be shocked and disgusted to learn that there are people who wouldn’t allow exceptions to an abortion ban to accommodate these horrors. If you didn’t read that last letter, or if, after reading it, you didn’t ...

We won’t go back

To the editor: Right now, Ohioans are voting on Issue 1, a citizen-led ballot initiative to stop Ohio’s extreme abortion ban — a ban that includes no exceptions for rape or incest — and to keep personal, private medical decisions between a woman and her doctor. We know that anti-abortion politicians have pulled out all the stops to prevent this vote from happening: Scheduling a special August election after making them illegal earlier this year, rewriting ballot language to make the issue more confusing to voters and lying about what the issue would actually do. All that ...

No in November

To the editor: Abortion harms women. For every child killed by abortion, the life of the mother also is harmed. Chemical abortion, commonly known as the abortion pill, accounts for 50 percent of all abortions in Ohio. Less commonly known are its side effects on women: One in every 20 women visits the emergency room after beginning a chemical abortion, and at least three of every 100 women will need to visit a doctor to complete a chemical abortion. And up to one in five women suffer from chemical abortion complications. Another 42 percent of abortions in Ohio happen through ...

Don’t be distracted

To the editor: Don’t allow the Israeli war to distract you from the corrupt policies that are ruining our country and economy, implemented by nincompoop President Joe Biden. He claims inflation is down. You’re still paying higher prices and spending $10,000 more a year for the same goods and services as you did before Biden. He claims credit for creating 336,000 jobs in September. Here’s the Labor Department’s rough breakdown: 140,000 were returning from layoffs due to the man-made virus crisis caused by Biden’s mandates, 73,000 are government jobs that are paid for by ...

Issue 1 bad on many levels

To the editor: “Woe to those who enact unjust statutes and write oppressive decrees.” (Isaiah 10:1) What is a greater injustice than to attempt to make killing helpless innocents a constitutional law? Truthfully, “Slaughter of infants not yet born is the most grievous crime of all.” (St. Maria Faustina Kowalska) The godless left’s devaluation of the sacred dignity of human life is not all the culture of death desires. Issue 1 also removes parental consent and even parental notification. It opens the door to transgender propaganda in the school classroom and eliminates the ...

Councilwoman seeks support

To the editor: I trust all is well and that you are being the best that you can be in this moment in time. As most of you are aware, I am a native of Steubenville. I was raised here, attended the public schools, graduated from Steubenville High School (Big Red) and am a graduate of Ohio State University. I left for a time and brought my family back here to raise. I knew this would be the best place for my kids to grow up. When I moved back, I saw how Steubenville had changed from when I was young. I wanted to help the town thrive again. I became involved with a local nonprofit ...
