Give women their rights back

To the editor: On Nov. 7, Ohioans are being asked to weigh in on some incredibly important issues. Issue 1 is one of them. As I pass all the yard signs concerning Issue 1 asking me to “protect children,” “protect women” and “protect parents’ rights,” I cannot help but be offended. I hear the passionate arguments against abortion. I simply do not agree. And the misinformation I hear does the arguments no good. I am offended and incensed that these signs imply that I need a law to protect me from my own decision-making. A woman is utterly capable of making ...

Know who you are voting for

To the editor: A while ago, the chairman of the Democrat Party wrote a letter endorsing two of the candidates running for Steubenville City Council spots in next month’s General Election (“City Council seats up for grabs,” Sept. 10.) These two individuals are not listed as Democrats on the ballot on the website of the Jefferson County Board of Elections, although both are lifelong members of that party. Instead, Ted Gorman is running as an independent for the 5th Ward and former 4th Ward Councilman Scott Dressel is running as a write-in for council at large. Why didn’t either ...

Anyabwile, Gorman Dressel clearly best

To the editor: I attended the candidate forum at Eastern Gateway Community College on Oct. 19, and by the time it ended, it became clear that there was a big difference between the candidates on stage for Steubenville City Council. Three candidates in particular stood out for their vision, enthusiasm for the city of Steubenville and for their knowledge of how government works. First Ward Councilwoman Asantewa Anyabwile, Steubenville High School Principal Ted Gorman and former council member and local business owner Scott Dressel all shined when asked questions about budgets, ...

Vote no on Issue 1

To the editor Reproductive rights. As a woman, I am appalled that other women don’t see that there is a new life involved once they become pregnant. That is a new life and they do not have a right to kill that life. The child is separate from them. Science has proven that. In regard to our youth who become pregnant: With Issue 1, the parents wouldn’t have to know and a teen could get an abortion without the parents knowing. Is that what we want? Also with Issue 1, if a teen is questioning their sexual identity they can try to alter their gender without the parents knowledge. ...

Issue 1 is worse than Roe

To the editor: We have all seen the ads in favor of Issue 1 stating that it is needed because women need to have access to abortions and miscarriage care. These are false claims that must be challenged. The Ohio Revised Code specifically distinguishes abortion from miscarriage (see Section 2919.11.) Abortion involves a living human being; in a miscarriage, death has already occurred. Miscarriage care is not abortion. In his recent analysis of Issue 1 (available online at www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov/Ballot-Initiatives), Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost stated frankly that, “Ohio ...

Some things to think about

To the editor: As we are hearing and seeing more ads both for and against the Ohio’s marijuana legislation — Issue 2 on the Nov. 7 ballot. Let me speak to what we are seeing and reading here at Family Recovery Center: • According to national reports, alcohol is the most widely used substance by teenagers, and, for drugs, marijuana has the highest prevalence. • The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports marijuana use among youth and adolescents is a major public health concern. In 2019, roughly one in eight adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 — 13 percent — ...
