Merger would benefit Columbus

To the editor: The Diocese of Steubenville has posted on its website the latest financial audit for the year ending June 30. Net assets at the end of the year were $15,227,738. This was an increase of $2,378,052 over the previous year ending June 30, 2023. The increase in net assets could have been more if not for a $60,000 legal settlement expense and a refund of $436,817 for restricted contributions for the cathedral project. Does this appear to be a diocese in a financial downward spiral that former Bishop Jeffrey Monforton told his priests and members of the diocese in October ...

Cash cow on life support

To the editor: Why do Democrats try to justify maintaining corrupt, inept, fraudulent, government programs costing taxpayers trillions of dollars? It’s there modus operandi, their cash cow they’ve been milking for 40 years. How many of them are cashing Social Security checks sent to their relatives who are 120 years old or dead? To see their list of stupid programs and billions spent go to DOGE.gov. Democrats have no common sense. Democrats defend not deporting illegal aliens who murder, rape, rob, harm Americans and wokeism — even Disney and scores of other major companies ...

City officer makes difference

To the editor: With so much emphasis placed on the mistakes of police officers nowadays, I feel the need to applaud the good that they do as well. Last week, I asked my wife to pick me up at a local car garage where my vehicle was being serviced. Unfortunately, she got lost and was seen on Sunset Boulevard in a confused state. The police were notified, and the officer who arrived at the scene, Sean Extrovich, not only made several attempts to contact me, but he picked me up at the garage so I could meet my wife. In my opinion, picking me up went above and beyond the call of ...

Democrats care about power, not citizens

To the editor: “Promises made, promises kept.” President Donald Trump has been in office for almost four weeks. He has moved quickly to undo the harm that previous administrations, especially Democrats, did to the citizens of our country. He pledged to find and stop government fraud and waste. The following are examples of what has been uncovered so far. The U.S. Agency for International Development was created to “feed the world and combat disasters and disease” (CBS News.) The following are examples of the programs that USAID has funded: DEI scholarships in Burma, a DEI ...

Lack of respect in age of Trump

To the editor: On Jan. 20, the inaugural ceremony for the 47th president of our great nation, Donald J. Trump, was graciously attended by his predecessor, President Joe Biden, in spite of Trump not showing him the same, long-established professional courtesy when Biden became the 46th president, following his defeat of Trump. In addition, President Trump, in the presence of his predecessor, stated ungraciously and incorrectly that he (Trump) had received an “overwhelming mandate from the American people” (in fact, he actually won the popular vote by one of the smallest margins ...

Listen to your heart to detect valve disease

To the editor: While more than 11 million Americans are living with heart valve disease at this very moment, leading to 25,000 deaths in the U.S. each year, an estimated three in four people have little to no knowledge of what it is. Heart valve disease occurs when one or more of the heart’s four valves disrupts blood flow. With age being the most common factor that increases risk, other cardiovascular diseases and conditions such as a previous heart attack, hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes and heart valve damage from some types of cancer treatments can also increase ...
