Sacred hymns or karaoke?

To the editor: Visiting many churches around the Tri-State Area, I’ve enjoyed sacred hymns with organ, but some churches have nothing but contemporary music, accompanied by mainly recordings. They’re difficult to sing, because they’re mostly solo music from individual artists. They’re not feasible for congregations, but these song leaders don’t seem to mind singing alone. I’m calling this new form “Karaoke Church.” Old hymns are rare, but when used, they’re altered with new chords and new rhythms. Disappointing. These are not a compromise. Participation is low ...

What are Democrats doing?

To the editor: Wow, those Democrats. What is going on? Democrats are complaining about the price of eggs. After the November election, Biden ordered millions of chickens slaughtered using bird flu as an excuse. Chickens do not fly, thus their contact with infected birds is minimal. Less hens, less eggs equals higher priced eggs. The Democrat governor of Wisconsin has redefined mother and father in state documents. He changed mother to “inseminated person.” Women who adopt children are also mothers. He changed father to “natural parent.” Mothers who give birth are natural ...

Pro-life isn’t just one issue

To the editor: We cannot pick and choose which lives we will defend. I have struggled with the ways in which our faith has been used to justify policies that completely contradict God’s call to love, mercy and justice. Cardinal Wilton D. Gregory’s powerful words have stuck with me in these challenging times of calling Catholics into action. He says, “I have been ashamed because of the flawed example that we as Catholics have given to the world because of our increasingly harsh treatment of rejecting people because of race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic origins or any ...

Reign of King Donald I

To the editor: It has, sadly, become quite obvious that the recently elected 47th president of the United States, Donald J. Trump, has no intention to respect our democratic system of government, as well as the legislative and judicial branches of our government, in order to attempt to arbitrarily exact his self-serving agenda in order to benefit himself, personally and professionally, as well as his extremely wealthy supporters, at the expense of America’s working class, poor, elderly and youth, for whom he had declared, obviously for political reasons, an affinity throughout the ...

Spay or neuter? Yes, please

To the editor: Bob Barker, longtime animal advocate and host of “The Price is Right” always ended each show with the quote, “Help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered.” Spaying or neutering your pet is the most effective way to save lives and decrease suffering. Even in homes, on leashes and in fenced yards, pets still can get loose. Unwanted litters of pets can happen. These unwanted pets can put stress and financial strain on their owners. These unwanted pets can continue to reproduce generation after generation of more unwanted pets and often ...

We’re facing nuclear threat

To the editor: In 1979, I hitchhiked to Washington, D.C., to march at a no nukes rally. Now, 46 years later, I feel like I need to march against another type of nuclear threat — nuking of our government and country as we know it. Just like a real nuclear bomb, this bomb will leave millions of people with their lives forever changed for the worst, however, the 1 percent of the wealthiest will make more money than ever thought possible and it will be on the backs of the 99 percent. We will suffer while they live the high life. I wanted to go on about the grifting and ...
