Rally should be inspiration

To the editor: It was so encouraging to hear that proud patriots in Jefferson County were holding a protest rally in front of the county courthouse to speak out against the potential privatization of the U.S. Postal Service. However, it was also discouraging to be told that it was “not smart” for the Democratic party to lead a protest. That’s all I needed to hear to convince me that I had to be there for last Sunday’s event and I was so pleased to see that other local Democrats made sure to be present to offer their support. The crowd that gathered was diverse and ...

USAID helps less fortunate

To the editor: Some time ago, I met a woman whose son had died in the Vietnam War. I met her at a Gold Star Family Weekend, an annual event at Camp Dawson in West Virginia. I am a Gold Star father and a Vietnam veteran. Her son was a member of a Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol when he was killed. She had visited Vietnam in the 1990s in honor of him, to see the nation he had died defending. She toured the country, spoke at an event, was interviewed by local media (she walked out of the interview after she, and America, were repeatedly blamed for the war.) At the end of her visit ...

Taxpayers will fund project

To the editor: I was glad to see that a meeting about proposed water projects for Amsterdam and Bergholz was reported on by the Herald-Star. As was mentioned by the meeting’s participants, water line breaks are frequent in this part of the county. I noticed that while state funding, state money and capital and operating budgets were referred to, the ultimate source of money for this and other projects was not specified. Before money is moved around and sliced and diced, it must first be collected from taxpayers. I’ve met many public officials and civil servants and they do ...

Don’t blame the message app

To the editor: Things are moving fast on this one. By the time this is published heads may have rolled. If not, the system’s more broken than we’d feared. Let’s look at what happened. On March 11, Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief for The Atlantic, received a connection request from President Trump’s national security adviser on the publicly available encryption app Signal. Two days later, he found himself included on a group chat headed: “The Houthi PC (Principals Committee) Small Group.” Note that Goldberg didn’t initiate contact on either chain. The first came by ...

What’s wrong with Democrats?

To the editor: Democrats are committing suicide by Lingchi. They oppose every issue most Americans support: Closed borders; government accountability; American-based jobs; lower taxes — inflation — gas prices; safe streets; deporting illegal alien gang-members; utilizing oil, coal and gas resources; and America-first policies. Democrats defend every issue 80 percent of Americans are against: Corrupt, wasteful government spending; open borders; restricting free speech; men in women’s sports; and a weak, woke military. Democrats believe terrorist Mahmoud Khalil’s ranting ...

Just a few thoughts

To the editor: “In propaganda, as in love, anything is permissible which is successful.” — Joseph Goebbels, Nazi propaganda minister Why would two draft dodgers, Donald Trump and Elon Musk, care about veterans? The national debt is $38 trillion, and Trump is responsible for $8 trillion of that, almost one quarter of the total debt — that’s more than any other president. If the Republicans are so worried about the debt, have all of them lead by example and take a 50 percent pay cut, get rid of all their perks and keep only one staff member. White Christian ...
