Today marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, and it is appropriate that we honor those who were willing to stand tall against what some considered to be nearly impossible odds to defend our freedoms. Because of the sacrifices that were made on that day — June 6, 1944 — along the beaches of Normandy, France, Allied forces were able to continue on their mission of defeating Adolph Hitler, the Nazis and the Axis forces that had brought a reign of terror and tyranny to Europe. Program helping to build leaders

A group of nine area businessmen and women have completed one journey and are embarking on another as graduates of the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Ohio Valley program. An Ohio University medical student and an assistant professor decided to examine the relationship between six “social determinants of health” and the prevalence of diabetes. What they found isn’t really a surprise, but it could inform better decision-making — or at least a greater sense of urgency. Districts need to move on phones

With the passage of Ohio House Bill 250, lawmakers sent a strong message about the importance of protecting students from the harm done by constant access to cellphones during the school day. Now, as each school district had been required to come up with a policy of its own, the state has unveiled its model policy for minimizing cell phone use in schools. “By removing the distraction of cell phones from classrooms, our school children will be free to flourish and will see improved academic engagement and social interaction,” Gov. Rulli right choice in 6th District race

On June 11, a special election will be held to choose whether Republican Michael Rulli or Democrat Michael L. Kripchak will fill the 6th Congressional District seat that had been held by Bill Johnson before he resigned Jan. 21 to become the 10th president at Youngstown State University. Relay for Life spreads hope

Relays for Life events offer a time to remember those who have been lost to cancer and provide the light of hope for those still battling and those who have survived, while being surrounded by family, friends and other supporters. Such an evening will be held Saturday, as the Brooke-Hancock American Cancer Society Relay for Life returns to Wellsburg’s Central Park, with activities scheduled from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. and featuring a theme of “Rockin’ Around the Clock,” reminiscent of 1950s and 1960s rock and roll.
