Tradition continues at Greek festival

Since 1986, the Holy Trinity Greek Food Festival has helped to signal that the summer season has arrived and that our area’s festival season is officially under way. That tradition will be renewed for the 38th time beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday, when the festival officially begins its three-day run. Vote Tuesday ­— show you care

Seldom do we look at a ballot and see just one race to vote on. That’s the situation residents of our region will face when they go to the polls in Tuesday’s special election. The race to fill the unexpired term in Ohio’s 6th Congressional District will be the only thing on the ballot. Those who cast a vote will be asked to choose between Republican Michael Rulli and Democrat Michael Kripchak, with the winner serving through the end of year. The names William Lowry and John Miller might not mean much to you today, but there is a direct line between what they started on June 7, 1806, and the newspaper you hold in your hand (or are reading on a computer or mobile device) today. Sacrifices remembered

Today marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, and it is appropriate that we honor those who were willing to stand tall against what some considered to be nearly impossible odds to defend our freedoms. Because of the sacrifices that were made on that day — June 6, 1944 — along the beaches of Normandy, France, Allied forces were able to continue on their mission of defeating Adolph Hitler, the Nazis and the Axis forces that had brought a reign of terror and tyranny to Europe. A group of nine area businessmen and women have completed one journey and are embarking on another as graduates of the Weirton Area Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Ohio Valley program.
