Comedy and conversion
Only standing room remained at an event Monday night at Sycamore Youth Center, which saw American stand-up comedian Shayne Smith regale attendees with humorous tales from his disavowed past as a motorcycle gang member, as well as the story of his recent conversion to Roman Catholicism. A native of Fillmore, Utah, Smith is known for his comedy specials and podcast appearances, including an episode of “Pints with Aquinas,” which saw him travel to Steubenville in early 2024. Smith was invited to town for the event by the Rev. Drake McCalister of Holy Family Church in Steubenville. The performance was free, but volunteers collected a free-will offering to benefit Smith, who also took questions from the audience. — Christopher Dacanay
