Class AAA All-State teams announced

Brooke's Rado selected on All-State Second Team

Andrew Grimm ALL-STATE — Brooke's Avery Rado was selected for the WVSWA All-State Second Team after helping the Bruins reach the state tournament this season.

A fourth consecutive state softball title at Winfield paid dividends this season for the Generals, who landed three players on the Class AAA All-State first team.

Mattie Carroll, a senior pitcher who was part of three of those championships, was named first-team captain, as voted by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association at the conclusion of the state tournament.

Carroll was joined by Generals teammates catcher Rylee McClellan and outfielder Brooklyn Cole on the Class AAA first team.

Winfield was not only powered by Carroll’s pitching, but her bat as well. In the circle, the College of Charleston-bound Carroll tossed 180 2/3 innings this, appeared in 32 games and posted a 22-7 record, with two saves in two opportunities. She struck out 220 hitters on the way to being named Most Valuable Player in the Class AAA state tournament.

At the plate, Carroll had a .364 batting average (40 for 110) and eight doubles, a triple, two home runs and a team-high 29 RBIs.

“I would vote for Mattie every day of the week and twice on Sunday,” Winfield coach Steve Hensley said.

Keyser infielder Bibs Felton earned much consideration for top billing as well after her offensive numbers helped the Golden Tornado to a 25-8 record this season.

Felton led Class AAA and finished in the top five in the state in four offensive categories – batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage and home runs.

The junior batted .626 to top Class AAA and place fourth overall in the state, had a slugging percentage of 1.286 (No. 1 in AAA, fourth overall), a .706 on-base percentage (first in AAA, third overall) and 12 home runs (No. 1 in AAA, fifth overall).

Additionally, Felton had 57 hits, 12 doubles, six triples and 38 RBIs and scored 44 runs while helping Keyser to the state tournament.

Keyser coach Cody Spotts said softball isn’t even Felton’s best sport. The guard/forward prefers basketball.

“She’s an animal,” said Spotts, who took over coaching the Golden Tornado for Felton’s freshman season. “The numbers show it. She’s a worker. This season she developed an opposite-field game, and she’s become an even better fielder. She’s a well-rounded player.”

A shortstop who also played some at second base, Felton had a .918 fielding percentage this season.

Felton’s teammate Leighton Johnson was also selected as one of the three pitchers with Carroll to lead the All-State first team. Lily Dijkstra from John Marshall rounded out that list.

Keyser’s Brielle Root was a first-team catcher, along with McClellan. Rounding out the first-team infield was Point Pleasant’s Chloe Patrick, Kaylee White of John Marshall, Ayva Veltri of Herbert Hoover and Abbie Jeffers of Lincoln County.

Hoover’s Bella Haas joined Cole and Greenbrier East’s Reagan Cline as first-team outfielders.

Utility spots were awarded to two players from PikeView. Shelby Maddox, a sophomore, and Emma Compton, a junior, rounded out the first team.

Maddox and Dijkstra were the only sophomores on the first team.

Johnson, Root, Felton, Cline and Haas are all juniors returning next year, while the rest were seniors this season.

John Marshall junior infielder Nora Shock was named the second-team captain.

The rest of the second-team infield was comprised of Chapmanville senior Peyton Lusk, Ripley freshman Lillian Crist, Elkins senior Hailey Riffle and Robert C. Byrd senior Lexi Hardy.

Brooke junior Avery Rado, Nicholas County senior Abby Hilleary and Point Pleasant junior Rylann MacKnight were named to the team as pitchers.

Taylor Jones, a Hebert Hoover sophomore, was an outfielder, along with Chapmanville senior Hannah Miller and Point Pleasant senior Kyla Queen.

Chapmanville senior Evy Altizer and Rileigh Helmer, a freshman from Shady Spring, were named to the utility spots.

Earning honorable mention were Alenah Adkins (Nicholas County), Chloe Barlow (Robert C. Byrd), Campbell Bundy (Greenbrier East), Hallie Byrd (Lincoln County), Ava Cole (Winfield), Kathryn Crowder (Capital), Maggie Diserio (Brooke), Zoe Hyatt (Nitro), Jaidyn Johnson (Nicholas County), Emma King (John Marshall), Lauren Lambert (PikeView), Addie Lowe (Spring Valley), Campbell Lunsford (Herbert Hoover), Kira Lusk (Princeton), Tavery Lyons (Keyser), Gabby Mahanes (Elkins), Eden McKinney (Brooke), Emeri Nelson (Winfield), Laney Nelson (Lincoln County), Zoe Noe-Chaney (Chapmanville), Amiyah Robinson (Capital), Kierston Ross (Lincoln County), Bralee Roush (Point Pleasant), Brynn Roush (Point Pleasant), Brianna Shrewsbury (Shady Spring), Bristol Smith (Ripley), Jillian Starcher (Lincoln County), Reese Van Zant (Bridgeport), Paige White (St. Albans) and Jazmyn Wood (Brooke).
