Steubenville Police
Starting over: Police said they were investigating a shots fired call near Club 106 when they spotted $1 bills on the ground near the train tracks and thought the bills “could have bee dropped by someone running from the scene,” Saturday. Police collected $17. Several hours later a woman asked them to retrieve her iPhone from a residence in the 300 block of Virginia Avenue. A woman there said “she was given a bunch of phones after a fight at Club 106 and did not know who they belonged to.” She handed over a purple iPhone and police returned it to the owner.
Naked explorer: Residents reported a “young juvenile” walking in the area of Claire Street, Friday. Police said the child was naked so a bystander took off his shirt and put it on the youngster. Police knocked on the doors of homes where young children are known to reside but were unable to locate the child’s family, and residents said they had not seen the child before so Children Services was contacted. Shortly after, authorities made contacted with the child’s mother who told them she’d left “another juvenile” in charge of “the smaller children” and the boy she’d left in charge said he fell asleep after she left the residence “and was unaware that his sibling walked out the front door.”
Disappearing act: A woman claimed she saw a man brandish a handgun, pointing it at another man before they walked into a residence in the 1000 block of Park Street, Friday. Police went to the location she told them but were unable to make contact with anyone, and when they called the woman back she said she “was no longer at her residence, refused to provide any additional information and disconnected the call.”
Loaded up: A North Seventh Street resident said he let a female spend the night at his apartment and when he woke up, she was gone along with $60 in cash, his cell phone and house keys, Saturday.
Hanging out: A caller reported a man loitering in a parking lot in the 100 block of Stanton Boulevard, Friday. Police recognized the man, who was then advised to leave the area so he gathered his things and moved on.
Lost and found: A city resident said she dropped a small wallet containing three credit cards, her debit card and driver’s license outside the midtown Speedway, Friday. She said when she returned for it, the wallet was gone, and when employees reviewed surveillance footage they saw “someone…pick it up off the ground.”
Patience running thin: A resident in the 1100 block of Oak Grove Avenue had his radio cranked up to the dismay of neighbors, Friday. Police said they could hear the radio as they approached the residence, and when they spoke with him, police warned him to be mindful of his neighbors and if they had to return he’d be cited “as this has been an ongoing issue for far too long.”
Enjoying life: A disturbance was reported in the 800 block of North Sixth Avenue, Friday. The homeowner in question said they were “drinking and cooking, having a good time.” Police said all seemed to be in order so they left.
Hands off: A woman said her boyfriend “became aggressive and struck her several times in the face” before exiting her car on state Route 7 at University Boulevard, Saturday. Police said she had small cuts on her face and some redness, along with a small cut under her right arm. She said when he hit her “she immediately put her vehicle in park and refused to move until help arrived.” She told police she wants to pursue charges.
Unhappy reunion: A city resident claimed he and his ex were driving on John Scott Highway when she began assaulting him, “striking him several times in the face before (he) pulled over and let her out,” Friday.
Camped out: An officer on patrol spotted a man laying on the ground at Beatty Park, Saturday morning. Police told him the park was closed and he left.
Parking issue: The Fort Steuben apartments building manager said a man parked in the private lot and when he asked him to move his vehicle “became aggressive and started to threaten him” but eventually left the lot, Friday. Police located the driver, who said he’s had “prior issues” with the other man but he did not threaten him.
Charged: Thomas Vergis, 29, 125 Beechwood Drive, Wintersville, operating a vehicle under the influence and failure to maintain control after he allegedly struck a parked van, Sunday. Police said Vargas told them he’d just left a family member’s home when he struck the van. Police said the air bags on the van were deployed.
Head case: A disturbance was reported in the 400 block of South Sixth Street but the female involved refused to cooperate, Friday. She told police she was fine, though while speaking with her they said they noticed blood on her ear. She still wouldn’t talk about what happeed, though she did request an ambulance. Police said she told them she didn’t want to pursue charges.
Noise control: Someone in the 700 block of North Fourth Street thought people were making too much noise, Saturday. Police spotted several people sitting on someone’s porch and advised them of the company, so all agreed to keep their voices down.
