U.S. is less energy independent

To the editor: The United States from 1955 to the present has had air and water quality requirements that began as state and local government programs. In 1963, the federal government got involved and more agencies were formed and regulations were imposed, either by congress passing bills or presidents signing executive orders. During the years, because of more government agencies and regulations, the situation has become either the government workers are going to have a job or industry and workers. We have seen how this has played out. Global warming and green energy, the ...

25-Year Club event a success

To the editor: On behalf of the Weirton Steel 25-Year Club committee, we would like to take this time to thank all of the sponsors and workers who helped to make this year’s picnic possible and successful. The picnic was held July 15 at the Serbian Picnic Grounds, and was well-attended by more than 400 members. A big shout out to our sponsors, who gave generously to make this happen: First Choice America Community Federal Credit Union, Tudor’s Biscuit World and Hancock County Savings Bank. Other donors included James White Construction Co., Maxwell Welding, Clayton ...

Who do you trust?

To the editor: Currently, Ohioans have enjoyed a 50 percent-plus-one majority rule when we vote on ballot issues. However, the Ohio Legislature has scheduled a special election on Aug. 8 to increase that majority to 60 percent before any change can be made to the Ohio Constitution. Just a few months ago, our Republican legislators voted there would be no more August elections, but they tried to revoke that rule and didn’t get the votes to overturn it, but are holding an election anyway. This is lawlessness on top of lawlessness. They want to steal your voice by making it harder for ...

No on Issue 1 — let your voice be heard

To the editor: Wednesday’s opinion piece opened with a well-stated criticism of the upcoming Aug. 8 election (“Change Ohio’s Constitution, but not like this.”) The Issue 1 election is an obvious and transparent nod to a special interest — that of anti-abortion groups. Polls state that a majority of Ohioans support reproductive and abortion rights. This is not a minority opinion in our state. Currently in Ohio, a simple majority of 50 percent plus one allows passage of amendments. The majority wins. One person, one vote. We are being asked in this election to raise ...

Yes on Issue 1 to stop tyranny

To the editor: “A human being begins as a submicroscopic speck, and by the human principle of life which God gives it develops all its organs and bones and nerves and gradually develops into a grown man.” (Mary Peckins Ryan, “Christ and Church.”) Holding fast to the truth of the above statement, every pro-life organization in the state of Ohio is urging a yes vote on the state’s Issue 1. Their opponents, backed by the Anti-Christian Litigation Unit (the American Civil Liberties Union, or ACLU) and funded by Planned Parenthood are claiming that a no vote is somehow ...

51 percent needed to kill 60 percent

To the editor: There’s a special election coming up Aug. 8 to amend the Ohio Constitution. Special elections are called when there’s something urgent to address. What’s so urgent? Republicans in the Statehouse want to alter the century-old amendment procedure, setting a higher bar for citizens to vote through future amendments. Does that sound urgent? Nobody felt the need to change it last year, or earlier this year when Republicans basically banned August special elections. Well, I guess it’s urgent if they fear a proposal on the November ballot might pass with a simple ...
