Nothing like a debate

To the editor: Concerning politics, clergymen are to restrain themselves from statements on politics and I have found it true in my own life. In my ministry, I have never spoken of my own positions, nor will I here. That said, I must evaluate the misdefined “debate,” between the two candidates for president of the United States. The people of the United States want desperately to hear what the plans of each are for the voters. “I’m going to give each new homebuyer a $25,000 benefit to purchase that home.” Men and women, this is a means, not a goal, not a plan. A plan ...

There’s no joy in Mudville

To the editor: The Biden-Harris administration lied when they claimed they created more than 818,000 new jobs that were actually created in 2023, stated employment officials. In August, they lost more than 24,000 manufacturing jobs. On her first day in office Harris claims she’ll fix all of the problems she created. Her policy slogan for the future is Joy/feel good. Do you feel the joy when you pay 20 percent more at the grocery store, or pay your electric bill, higher interest rates, higher mortgages and rent, and the list goes on? Kamala, there’s no joy in Mudville — you ...

Biden, Harris lack strength

To the editor: Since Joe Biden and Kamala Harris took their oaths of office, our country’s foreign policy has seen one failure after another. Russia invaded Ukraine, and the Biden-Harris administration, along with Congress, have poured hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars into that conflict. Hamas invaded Israel — they have killed 1,200 Israelis and kidnapped a hundred others, including Americans. Over 11 million illegal aliens from all over the globe have flooded into our nation … and those are the ones we know about. That would be the same as adding the entire ...

Nothing wrong with GOP signs

To the editor: This is in response to the letter “Sign, sign everywhere a sign” that appeared in the Sept. 1 edition regarding political signs, and we want to address several false accusations. The letter falsely accused Republican officials of violating a Steubenville ordinance which prevents political campaign signs from being placed on any property more than 60 days prior to an election. It also incorrectly stated that political signs should not be displayed until Sept. 6 and further alleged that Republican officials acted as if the rules didn’t apply to them or didn’t ...

It’s the stupid economy

To the editor: In a letter I composed four years ago, I compared and contrasted the last three years of Obama’s administration with the first three years under Trump to illustrate Trump’s lack of progress vis-’-vis the economy. I chose to focus on three years because it would not have been fair to include the final year of Trump’s presidency as it was impacted by the COVID pandemic. This letter will compare Biden’s economic record against Trump’s, even though Biden’s no longer the candidate. I would prefer contrasting Harris’ economic policy plans (raising the ...

All candidates should be heard

To the editor: After visiting many towns and talking with hundreds of West Virginians, it is clear that they are very dissatisfied with the two-party system that runs statewide politics and, in particular, the governor’s office. Few have ever heard the names of the candidates of the three non-major parties, their principles or their platforms because they, to the detriment of we the citizens, are given no voice on media forums. The West Virginia Broadcasts Association, TV and radio stations and newspapers could well serve the state’s citizens by staging a debate so we can ...
