Mingo voters should pass issues

To the editor: Everyone has heard the phrase “elections have consequences.” This could not be overstated about this upcoming election, especially the local issues for Mingo Junction. One thing that I’m very concerned about is the passage of the renewals, especially the 1 percent income tax. I worked for Mingo Junction for more than three decades and have been through multiple economic downturns. I’ve lived through raises and concessions, depending on how well the mill was running. We know how that ended, especially for our Steelworkers. JSW helps, but not as much as ...

Why should we trust Harris?

To the editor: As I read the letters to the editor every week, I notice more and more rhetoric from both political parties. I watched the debate with Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. I watch different TV stations and, especially, the news. My observation of both candidates is that Trump has the experience, due to his previous presidency, and has a vision for the American worker: More jobs, higher wages and less taxes on their pay. Harris seems to talk around all issues — when she does talk. She posted Joe Biden’s economic policies on her website and even took Trump’s idea about ...

To the editor: In my years serving Wellsville, I’ve seen firsthand that strong families are the foundation of our town. As a former councilman and school board member, I understand parents’ unique challenges in raising children in today’s digital age. While the online world offers immense opportunities, it also presents significant risks that parents must navigate to protect their children. Across Ohio, parents are the first line of defense for their children’s safety, teaching right from wrong and guiding them toward success. The same standard should apply online, but the ...

Plate will help save lives

To the editor: In the state of Ohio, organizations have the opportunity to create license plates that reflect their cause, offering a unique medium for spreading awareness and saving support. There is an on-line petition aiming to propose the establishment of an organizational license plate for SAVE22. SAVE22 is a 501c(3) organization dedicated to preventing suicide among veterans, active-duty personnel and first responders. They support those who have served our nation and communities by listening to their stories and providing unwavering support, ensuring they are never alone or ...

Choose life

To the editor: Not repeatable. That describes your life and every human being who ever existed. You are one of a kind, one in forever, not repeatable. When did you become one in forever? At the very moment of conception. Science confirms that an unrepeatable human being is created at conception, a person not the same as any person who was ever created or will be created. Every person’s life begins at conception, and the rest of a person’s life is a continuation from the moment of conception. If that life is ended anytime after conception, the life of an unrepeatable person is ...

Local sailor fact-checks debate

To the editor: Despite word limitations imposed here it seems appropriate that I provide a brief introduction for this my very first letter to the editor. I am a fortunate United States Navy combat veteran of Operation Desert Storm whose fervent political independence was informed while on active duty by the Hatch Act. That cherished independence does not mean that I have not formed strong opinions on all things related to proper government operations, especially pertaining to the military. Close attention to such matters is common among those of us who have sworn to “support and ...
