Reassessment issue needs debate

To the editor: A group of lawmakers in Ohio are attempting to ban property taxes. Although it may appear enticing, since we all want to lower our taxes, we need to ask ourselves, “At what real costs?” This initiative will require getting 413,000 signatures on a petition before it can be placed on the November ballot. If passed, the amendment would go into effect in January, without discussion of how this lost revenue will be replaced. This raises concerns about funding for schools, local service (like 911) and other public safety services, such as grants to volunteer fire ...

Love thy neighbor

To the editor: I and many of my neighbors of Penco Estates received a letter on Aug. 1 from Bishop Mark E. Brennan of the Wheeling-Charleston Diocese concerning a Miracle Field and Playground to be placed in our neighborhood within the city of Weirton. This letter was in response to a petition sent to the diocese regarding the proposed Miracle Field to be built adjacent to St. Joseph the Worker School. Brennan’s letter was condescending and implied that the neighborhood residents have no Christian love for young people with disabilities. That is an absurd and arrogant ...

Poised for digital comeback

To the editor: From steel to silicon, the Northern Panhandle is once again at a crossroads. With the Trump administration’s Digital Assets Report setting the tone for national crypto and AI policy, West Virginia’s energy-rich regions have a historic chance to lead. Here in the Ohio River Valley, we’ve got the raw materials for a digital comeback: Underutilized substations, legacy industrial zones and a workforce built on resilience. As the federal government signals support for blockchain, Bitcoin mining and decentralized infrastructure, we must act — not later, but now. ...

Is Rulli missing in action?

To the editor: I’ve been trying to meet with our U.S. representative, Mike Rulli, to explain why he should support HB 25 — the National Retail Sales Tax Bill (also known as the Fair Tax Act of 2025) for a year, but with no success. His staff tells me his schedule during the August recess is full and he can’t work me in, but his two district offices tell me they don’t know anything about his schedule. He’s in the district for the whole month of August, but no town hall meetings or appearances are scheduled? What gives? Do you only get access if you are a major donor to ...

A cautionary tale

To the editor: Since the re-election of President Donald Trump, approximately nine months ago, manufacturing has been making a comeback. It seems that surrounding states and local representatives are working to get companies to come in these areas that have lost jobs, such as steel and coal and have been successful. We had this and it was taken away, and our representatives are uninterested in pursuing these jobs and getting them back. I wrote a letter to the editor dated Nov. 21, 2000, concerning the impact of the local mills and the tax base. I think it is worth reading again. ...
