Reds pounce on Pirates, Glasnow

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The showdown between a pair of promising 23-year-olds with electric, if erratic, stuff never materialized. Pittsburgh’s Tyler Glasnow couldn’t find the strike zone on Monday night. Neither, really, could Cincinnati’s Brandon Finnegan. Instead, Michael Lorenzen - not too far removed from being a prospect himself - came in settled things down for the surprising Reds. The starter turned semi-reluctant reliever took over for a shaky Finnegan in the third inning and escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam unscathed to help propel Cincinnati to a 7-1 victory. Lorenzen ...

BOSTON (AP) — Sandy Leon hit a three-run homer in the 12th inning — his third hit of the game — and Chris Sale pitched seven dominant innings in his Red Sox debut to lead Boston to a 3-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night. Leon also doubled in the third inning but got thrown out at the plate after running through third base coach Brian Butterfield’s stop sign. It was scoreless into the bottom of the 12th, when Antonio Bastardo (0-1) walked Jackie Bradley Jr. and Pablo Sandoval with one out. Leon followed with a drive over the Green Monster to end a cold ...

Halfway point reached at 2017 Spring Training

Toronto Blue Jays reliever T.J. House has been released from a hospital, one day after he was hit on the head by a line drive during a spring training game. House arrived at Toronto’s spring training ballpark during Saturday’s game between the Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies. “Obviously, it was definitely a rough day yesterday,” House said. “Whirlwind experience. And I’m doing a lot better than I thought I would be doing today.” House was taken off the field in an ambulance Friday. He was struck in the ninth inning of a game against the Detroit Tigers and taken to ...

Pirates’ Kang on restricted list, delayed by U.S. visa

BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) — Pittsburgh infielder Jung Ho Kang was placed on the restricted list by the Pirates while he is delayed in South Korea by visa issues related to a recent DUI arrest. “It just is a reflection of the reality that he’s not here today on March 11, and we need to get him into Bradenton to prepare for the 2017 season,” Pirates president Frank Coonelly said Saturday. While on the restricted list, Kang does not count against the 40-man roster or the 25-man active roster. Kang received an eight-month suspended prison sentence last week after a DUI arrest in ...

Court hands Kang a suspended jail term

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A South Korean court has handed Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Jung Ho Kang a suspended two-year prison sentence for fleeing the scene after crashing a car into a guardrail while driving under the influence of alcohol. The sentence handed down Friday by the Seoul Central District Court was a heavier punishment than the 15 million won ($13,000) fine prosecutors had sought, but still clears the 29-year-old Kang to join the Pirates for the new baseball season. Kang was twice previously fined on drunk driving-related charges in 2009 and 2011. He is in the third ...
