Bucs top Brew Crew in 10th inning

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Josh Harrison singled home Gift Ngoepe with one out in the 10th inning to lift the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1 on Saturday night. Ngoepe led off the inning with a single against Carlos Torres (1-3), advanced to second on a wild pitch and took third on pinch-hitter Jose Osuna’s fly ball. Harrison drove a ball over the head of right fielder Domingo Santana for his seventh career walk-off hit. Tony Watson (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the Pirates. Pittsburgh’s Gerrit Cole and Milwaukee’s Matt Garza each allowed a run over seven ...

Votto, Adleman lead Reds over Bucs

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds don’t play Pittsburgh again until August. They wish the wait wasn’t that long. Joey Votto doubled twice, drove in two runs and scored twice, leading Tim Adleman and the Reds over the Pirates 4-2 on Thursday. Adam Duvall drove in Votto both times as the Reds won for the fourth time in five games. Cincinnati is 6-1 against the Pirates this year. “We played good ball in this series and the one in Pittsburgh,” Reds manager Bryan Price said. “We took on some pretty good pitchers in (Ivan) Nova and (Jameson) Taillon. The guys are playing ...

Buccos back on track

CHICAGO — Last season’s division rivalry with the Chicago Cubs provided few, if any, good memories for Pittsburgh Pirates, especially at Wrigley Field. Things are off to a much better start this time around. David Freese and Francisco Cervelli each drove in two runs to back Gerrit Cole, and the Pirates held off the Cubs 4-2 Friday to end a four-game skid. The Pirates were 4-14 against the World Series champion Cubs in 2016, and won just once in Chicago. “They’re a good team, but we don’t take a backseat to anyone,” Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. “You got to love ...

Red Sox sneak past Bucs

BOSTON — Hanley Ramirez looked plenty healthy in a big spot for the Boston Red Sox. After a recent absence because of the flu, Ramirez doubled during a three-run rally in the eighth inning Thursday that sent the Red Sox over the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3. “I think he’s carried what he did last year into this season despite missing the four games in Detroit,” Red Sox manager John Farrell said. “I think he’s carried that confidence he had last season into the first five games that he’s been active.” The game was a makeup from a rainout in the opening series. Boston ...

Cincinnati sweeps Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Reds rookie Amir Garrett threw another gem, taking a shutout into the seventh inning and leading Cincinnati over the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-2 Wednesday night for a three-game sweep. Garrett (2-0), the former St. John’s basketball player, blanked the Pirates until David Freese hit a two-run homer. Garrett gave up five hits, walked none and struck out five in 6 2/3 innings. In his major league debut last week, the 24-year-old lefty pitched six scoreless innings to win at St. Louis. Jose Peraza, Eugenio Suarez and Tucker Barnhart each had three of the 15 hits for ...

Reds power past Bucs

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Scooter Gennett homered for the second straight night and finished with three hits, helping the Cincinnati Reds overcome the early departure of injured starter Rookie Davis to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-2 Tuesday for their sixth win in seven games. Gennett capped the scoring with a three-run drive into the right field bleachers in the eighth inning off Trevor Williams. Davis, a rookie right-hander, left in the fifth inning with a bruised right forearm after being struck by a pitch from Pittsburgh’s Jameson Taillon. He worked four innings in his second major ...
