The Wildcats, one day after getting run ruled by rival Indian Creek at home, bounced back with an impressive 8-4 victory on the road over Steubenville at Crimson Complex.
“I’m really proud of our guys,” Edison head coach Mike Collopy said. “We talked before we left and told them we can’t go backwards, we can only go forward. We asked them to come out, be aggressive and play our game and we did that. Nolan (Haught) gave us a really good start, we made the plays behind him and we had really good at bats. We just got it done. We needed to get it done and we got it done.”
On the flip side of things, Big Red (9-4), a day after taking advantage of Weir High mistakes and finding ways to get runners in for a big win a day prior, committed six errors and only turned 11 hits into four runs.
“We had way too many errors,” Big Red head coach Justin Banks said. “You’re not going to win many baseball games when you have that many errors. We hit the ball well, we had 11 hits and hit the ball hard, even the outs were hard outs, but we could not overcome the errors. You can’t make mistakes against the good teams here in the Valley and expect to win and today shows that.

Andrew Grimm MAKING THE PLAY — Big Red shortstop Royal Mayo fires to third to get the lead runner after knocking down a ground ball.
“We were playing from behind the whole game, they got the lead and did a good job of adding to it. We chipped away but they kept adding to it and were able to pull away.”
Edison (9-3) jumped ahead 2-0 in the top of the first, loading the bases then getting runs on back-to-back Big Red errors.
In the bottom of the third, Big Red cut the margin in half when Royal Mayo tripled and then scored on an RBI single by Cole Bowers.
Those two accounted for most of Big Red’s offense on the day as Mayo tripled twice and went 4 for 4, scoring three times, while Bowers was 3 for 4 with three RBIs.
Edison got that run back in the top of the fourth on a Liam Bissett RBI single with two outs to make it 3-1, then a three-run fifth really put them in control.

Andrew Grimm IN THE FIELD — Edison second baseman Santino Auteri makes a throw to first for an out.
A single and two walks loaded the bases, then Kayden Russell grounded out to bring a run across before an error with two outs plated two more runs, making it 6-1 Edison.
Mayo tripled and was driven in by Bowers again in the bottom of the fifth, but, after back-to-back errors to start the inning in the top of the sixth, Kyle Long’s RBI single brought two more runs across to make it 8-2. Long finished with two hits and a pair of RBIs.
Nicky Lovato came on in relief for Big Red and fanned two, getting out the inning without more damage. Bowers worked a scoreless seventh to keep the margin where it was. Starter AJ Borsch was charged with just two earned runs in going five-plus.
Big Red got a run each in the bottom of the sixth and seventh on a Jagger Rawson RBI groundout and a Bowers RBI single, but Haught finished a complete game effort.
“This is a big win for us against a good team,” Collopy said. “They’re a great program. I know this is coach Banks’ first year but he’s been around forever and is a good coach. They never quit, it doesn’t matter what the lead is in the last inning, you never feel comfortable until you get the last out.”
