Moundsville pulls away from young Post 33

Andrew Grimm DELIVERY — Post 33 starter Patrick Jenkins delivers during the first inning of Tuesday's game against Moundsville Post 3.

STEUBENVILLE — Coming into its first season back on the field in a couple of summers with a young team, Post 33 knew there would be some growing pains.

The youthful Steubenville team had a few more of them on Tuesday against a more experience Moundsville Post 3 club, falling victim to a couple of big innings in a 16-1 loss at Fred Heatherington Field.

Manager Lee Bainbridge, however, is seeing some signs of progress with the youthful squad.

“We’ve got a young squad,” Bainbridge said. “We have a lot of freshmen and sophomores, but they’re here to work. I know we don’t have any wins just yet, it’s not showing in the results yet, but from the beginning of the season to now we’re improving. That’s all we can ask of these young guys.

“That’s what this year is all about, working and getting better. We’re young, this year is not about winning games as much as improving and working as a team together.

Andrew Grimm GETTING IT IN — Post 33 outfielder Mason Chmielorski makes a play back into the infield after tracking the ball down.

“Hopefully it will show in the results by the end of the season, but it will pay dividends next year and down the road.”

So far this season Post 33 (0-4) has gone up against defending West Virginia state champion Wheeling Post 1, Barnesville’s summer program and Moundsville being the latest with a more experienced roster, some big tests for any club especially one with so many youthful starters.

Post 33 also has the Beast of the East coming up and St. Clairsville Post 159 on the schedule later on in the season.

“We’re playing some really good teams that are older,” Bainbridge said. “Moundsville is really good team. We’re going up against college guys with freshmen and sophomores. It’s tough to look at the scoreboard and get the full picture.

“We”ve been playing in some close games and then give up a big inning, and those kill games. We gave up a lot of runs today with two outs, too, and that’s a killer.

Andrew Grimm CONTACT — Post 33's Kole Yourkovich puts the ball in play.

“We’re going to be alright. These guys are going to keep working and getting better and we have a lot of baseball in front of us.”

Steubenville got off to a good start and scored first on Tuesday. After starter Patrick Jenkins worked a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first, Jonathan Wineman hit a two-out single in the bottom half and scored on Kole Yourkovich’s two-out RBI single for a 1-0 lead.

Moundsville (5-5) answered in the top of the second, however, plating four runs. They loaded the bases with no one out. Steubenville looked to escape with the game tied, getting to two outs with only a run crossing on a sac fly, but the third out proved to be hard to get as Post 3’s next three batters singled, making it 4-1.

After adding a run in the third, Moundsville had the big inning that has plagued Post 33 so far this summer — an 11 run outburst in the fourth capping the scoring.

Also for Post 33, Mason Chmielorski and Kyle Coldanato had a single. Jenkins fired the first three innings with four strikeouts and three walks in taking the loss. Wineman and Chase Beall combined the rest of the way.

Andrew Grimm ON THE MOVE — Post 33's Mason Chmielorski heads to second base after his hit dropped in.

For Moundsville, Brody Thomas had a double, single and four RBIs, Hayden Hughes had three hits and two RBIs, Hunter Coulter had two hits and an RBI and Rico Beveridge drove in a pair of runs.

Coulter pitched the first four innings with three strikeouts for the win on the mound.
