Edison girls set school record

RICHMOND — The Edison girls basketball team’s start to the season is officially the best in program history.

The Wildcats topped visiting Catholic Central on Thursday night, 55-30, improving to 17-0 on the season and setting a new school record for consecutive victories.

The Wildcats led 15-11 after one and 21-18 at halftime before breaking things open in the second half, out-scoring the Crusaders 34-12 after the break.

Sophia Henderson led the way with a game-high 17 points, while Abby Carpenter tallied 10 and Mimi Ault nine.

Central, which fell to 11-8, was led by nine each from Mary Rohde and Mara Delaney.

Both teams qualified for next week’s OVAC tournament and will be in action in the semifinals on Monday. Edison is the No. 2 seed in Class 4A and will host No. 3 seed Indian Creek. Central in the No. 3 seed in Class 2A and will travel to No. 2 seed Caldwell.

Toronto falls to Heartland

TORONTO — The Toronto girls basketball team dropped a 58-36 decision at home Thursday to OVAC tournament qualifier Hearltand Christian.

The Red Knights (7-12) were led by 16 points from Joesy Dickinson and 10 from Olivia Owings.

The Red Knighs will travel to Brooke Monday in OVAC consolation action.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Oak Glen tops Madonna

WEIRTON — The Oak Glen boy basketball team earned a repeat win over Madonna Thursday night, 77-38.

The Bears (9-4) got 11 from Elijah Knisely and points from 12 different players.

Madonna (2-14) was led by 16 from Jake Druga.

Oak Glen hosts Brooke tonight.
