Franciscan University a founding member of New York Jets–ECAC Women’s Flag Football League

STEUBENVILLE — Franciscan University of Steubenville has been selected as one of 10 collegiate programs nationwide to join the inaugural New York Jets-sponsored Eastern College Athletic Conference Women’s Flag Football League, officials have announced.

The league is scheduled to begin play this spring.

The invitation follows Franciscan’s breakout season and growing national visibility.

Franciscan’s women’s club flag football program, founded in 2024 under head coach Connor Arlia, former Weirton Madonna athlete, West Virginia University wide receiver and Arena Football League standout, quickly established itself as a force. The Barons posted a 6-1 record in their first year, earning victories over the University of Pittsburgh and several Presidents’ Athletic Conference teams. In October, the team was one of only four programs in the country invited to compete in an exhibition at Acrisure Stadium during halftime of the Steelers game against Cleveland.

Beyond their competitive success, the Barons are known for their strong community, witness to the Catholic faith and embodiment of Franciscan University’s mission of excellence and virtue.

“When the Jets and ECAC invited us to participate in the new league, we enthusiastically embraced the opportunity,” said Danny Andersen, Franciscan University athletic director. “It’s a chance for our team to compete at a high level against schools outside the region and truly advance the mission of the university. Our flag football program is already known for its faith, passion and excellence on and off the field.”

The new league was made possible through a $1 million grant from the Betty Wold Johnson Foundation. It will be the largest collegiate women’s flag football league in the nation. Competition will follow a 7-on-7 format, with media day and a USA Football Talent ID Camp held at MetLife Stadium in February, regular-season matchups from February through April and a championship at MetLife the first weekend in May.

Joining Franciscan in the league are Allegheny College, Eastern University, Kean University, Long Island University, Mercy University, Mercyhurst University, Montclair State University, Mount St. Mary’s University and Penn State Schuykill.
