Big Red girls pull away from Creek, 9-1

STEUBENVILLE — Indian Creek goalie Tatum Campbell was a brick wall against Big Red for the first half of the match as she turned back attack after attack and shot after shot.

The Redskins trailed by just a goal going into the second half, however, that half proved to be a different story as the flood gates opened and Steubenville collected seven unanswered goals en route to a 9-1 victory via mercy rule in the fourth game of the 14th Annual Together We Care event Saturday afternoon on Reno Saccoccia Field inside Harding Stadium.

Campbell faced 31 shots on goal, and she was able to turn away 21 of them as she did her best to keep her team in the match against their offensively-potent rivals.

“Very much so,” Big Red (11-2-2) head coach Annie Cutri said. “She definitely did a great job. I think we had like 23 shots in the first half, and she was impeccable. Kudos to her. She played one heck of a game.”

Campbell faced 47 shots total on the day. She made some big saves, while Big Red scored some of their goals on shots that hit off Campbell that she wasn’t able to fully corral.

“Absolutely, she played a great match,” first-year Indian Creek (3-10) head coach Abby Copeland said. “She has been very impressive all season. She has been there for us all season. I don’t know where we would be without her. She made some unbelievable saves today as well as the entire season.”

Big Red led 2-1 at halftime before breaking the match open in the second half.

Individually for the victors, Bailee Beall tallied two goals and two assists, Jaylin Crites contributed two goals and Lucy Saccoccia collected one goal and two assists. Also, Kenzy Petrelle and Gianna Thomas each produced a goal and an assist, Brynn Bowers and Delaney Tucker each delivered a goal, while Gabby Rea and Jolee Lombardo each added an assist.

Sadie Edwards played in the goal in the first half for the hosts, while Jodeci Green played in the net in the second half. Neither one recorded a save on the day.

Kaydence Walker recorded the lone goal of the match for the Red and Gold.

Beall opened the scoring in the first half when she scored off an assist from Petrelle to give her team a 1-0 lead with 16:16 left to play before halftime.

Big Red extended its advantage to 2-0 when Saccoccia scored off an assist by Beall with 8:52 remaining in the half.

Walker scored when she kicked a bouncing ball over the head of Edwards and into the back of the net to pull the girls in white to within 2-1 with 3 minutes still showing on the scoreboard clock.

The hosts had a 27-1 in shots in the first half, but the girls in black only led by a goal at the break.

It was a different story in the second half. Petrelle scored off on assist by Saccoccia less than four minutes into it, and Big Red pulled away from that point.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have a lot of numbers,” Copeland said. “We were down three girls today. The girls tried their best. They played hard. They have worked hard all season.”

Once Big Red got rolling in the second half, they were hard to stop.

“One hundred percent,” Cutri said. “We tend to wait for instruction. We want them to try and be more creative and take ownership of what is happening and adapt. We want them to assess what is happening in real time.”

An Indian Creek defender did save a goal in the first half when she cleared the ball out from in front of an open goal.

“I am very proud of these girls,” Copeland said. “They continue to grow. This is my first year as head coach. We are trying to build a team. It is hard to explain how far these girls have come from the first day until today. I am proud of them. They have worked very hard.”

Indian Creek is scheduled to play St. Clairsville at 5:30 p.m. today on the road down at Red Devil Stadium.

Big Red is slated to play Linsly at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at home.

Earlier Saturday, the Weir girls defeated Edison, 9-0, via mercy rule, the Catholic Central girls defeated Harrison Central, 5-1 and the Harrison Central boys defeated Edison, 4-1. The Big Red boys capped off the day by defeating Catholic Central, 2-0.
