Guest column/All athletics are intuitively individual sports

Recently, I had a conversation with a highly respected, elite Valley coach who stated that members who compete in team sports have a different mentality than athletes competing in individual sports. After thinking about what he said, I had my doubts. In my opinion, I believe that the thought processes of all outstanding athletes are basically the same. To begin with, all dedicated athletes want to prove they are the best player in their position. The individual mentality is the same in all athletic competitions because even in team sports, each player must perform his particular ...

Trail offers look at Ohio’s history

Ohioans are proud of their state’s history as a vital component of the Underground Railroad. That’s why it is exciting to learn from Gov. Mike DeWine, the state Department of Development and TourismOhio that the Ohio Historical Underground Railroad Trail is expanding. There are now 48 stops on the trail, with the latest additions including the John Gee Black Historical Center in Gallipolis, Lucy Depp Park in Powell, the Gabriel Smith Memorial Gateway to Freedom Display at the Preble County District Library in Eaton and the Black Heritage Library and Multicultural Center in ...

Impact underestimated

To the editor: “Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent mind.” — Isaac Asimov I never met Charlie Kirk. He was just somebody whose social media “content” I liked. I admired his ability to debate. His courageous presentation of objective facts and truth, to people who resisted it. While I’ve watched and enjoyed his videos, his debates, his podcast, I never would have expected to be feeling the way I do now. An emotional connection exists, I never realized was there. I’m sad about this; I’m angry. Something in my chest wants to do something ... ...

Looking to the future

Early in the afternoon on Monday, we will have officially entered the fall season. That will happen at 2:19 p.m. And once the season officially changes over, we will be moving ever more quickly toward cooler temperatures. That means thoughts already are starting to turn toward what kind of weather we can expect as we work through Halloween and Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Year’s before we head into the dead of winter. There are a lot of resources to turn to when it comes to seeing what might lie ahead. Of course, two of the favorites that people have been turning to ...

False prophets, false flags

To the editor: I’ve been writing these letters for years, and to my memory I’ve never once mentioned Charlie Kirk, Nick Fuentes, or even Alex Jones or Rush Limbaugh. Why? Because nothing they’ve ever said has been worth a reply. Even now — barely a week after one of them was gunned down — I don’t think their words deserve my time. What does deserve attention is the strategy. It’s always the same: Gaslight and lie with conviction, throw out straw men, lob insults and ad hom, scapegoat and overwhelm with Gish gallops. Repeat the falsehoods loudly and often enough, and ...

Just a few reflections

To the editor: As I look at today’s world and reflect on my own upbringing, I am beyond thankful for my parents. My sister, brother and I were raised with the following principles: Put God first in your life and everything else will eventually fall into place; nothing is more important than your relationship with God, so foster that relationship every chance you get; never use the Lord’s name in a derogatory manner as it is a poor reflection on you; go to church regularly because being part of a community is important; love and respect your father and mother because they are your ...
